Delhi Capitals kept their hopes of entry into the playoffs alive as they registered a seven-wicket win over the league leaders Royal Challengers Bengaluru, handing RCB their first loss of the Women’s Premier League season.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Delhi restricted RCB to 109 for 20 overs. The target was easily chased as DC reached 111 for 3 in 15.4 overs, with 26 balls to spare.
Delhi’s chase had started with some initial difficulties as openers Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee were removed early, leaving Delhi at 24 for 2 in the fourth over. However, captain Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt added some stability to the DC innings as they added 52 runs for the third wicket.
Jemimah scored 24 off 26 balls, hitting four boundaries, while Laura anchored the innings with an unbeaten 42 off 38 balls, hitting four fours and a six. Marizanne Kapp later added an unbeaten 19 off 15 balls to take Delhi home.
For RCB, Sayali Satghare was the most successful bowler, taking two wickets for 18 runs, while Radha Yadav took one wicket.
Earlier, the RCB batting lineup had struggled to perform well after a good start. Smriti Mandhana, the team captain, top-scored with 38 off 34 balls, including six fours and a six. Radha added 18, but the remaining batting lineup did not contribute much, with eight players scoring in single figures.
The opening partnership of 36 between Smriti and Grace Harris was RCB’s highest partnership, after which the team lost its way to 78 for 5 and was eventually dismissed.
Nandani Sharma led the Delhi bowling attack with 3 wickets for 26 runs, while Marizanne, Minnu Mani, and Chinelle Henry took two wickets each.
Shree Charani also took one wicket. The victory took Delhi Capitals to the second spot on the points table with six points, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru was still at the top with 10 points.
