MK Stalin to Inaugurate Global Women's Summit in Chennai

Chief Minister M.K.Stalin will launch the Tamil Nadu State Government’s Global Women’s Summit. The purpose of the summit will be to bring together policy-makers, global organisations, corporate leaders and civil society members to address three major issues: Women’s Employment, Safety and Inclusion in the Labour Market.

According to the official press release from the State of Tamil Nadu, Deliberations and activity for the Global Women’s Summit will take place on January 27 and 28 at the Nandambakkam Trade Centre in Chennai as a component of the State’s Women Employment and Safety Programme.

It is part of the State Government’s commitment to provide greater institutional support for women to make it easier for them to gain access to the Labour Market, maintain employment, and return to work after taking a break.

Expected are an estimated 500+ delegates from various backgrounds including government agencies, global and regional organizations, businesses and academia, and non-profit organizations.

Key participants will be Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, senior officials from the World Bank, representatives of UN Women, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India team. International delegates include senior political leaders from Mauritius.

Over the two-day event, there will be 11 thematic sessions covering topics such as: skills development; occupational health and safety; leadership development; innovation policies/legal frameworks to promote gender equality; and building partnerships between the public and private sectors to increase formal employment for women.

The sessions will take place over 50 days and will consist of seven different forums, with over 70 different presenters from India and other countries, sharing knowledge and experience regarding research, best practices, and policies for supporting women's access to safe and dignified jobs.

All sessions will feature panel discussions and a series of workshops to assist in identifying viable, implementable, and scalable strategies to realize the stated objectives.

During the final session of this summit, Udhayanidhi will preside over the closing session of the summit. The Government of Tamil Nadu will launch a two-pronged statewide campaign to enable women to develop skills and support employment access through traditional means.

According to the executive committee, the summit demonstrates Tamil Nadu's commitment to gender equality, economic development and expansion of the economy via inclusive, gender-based policy initiatives throughout the state.
