  • Beltarodi police appreciated for submitting chargesheet within 48 hours

Nagpur police commissioner Ravinder Singal on Tuesday issued orders to establish a clear-cut protocol for dealing with crimes against women with the aim of taking swift and effective action as well as timely filing of chargesheets.

While reviewing the city’s flagship ‘Police Didi’ initiative meant to raise awareness and build trust among girls and women in local communities Ravinder stressed that investigation officers should not wait for the official deadline to file chargesheets. He highlighted the Beltarodi police’s swift action in filing a chargesheet within 48 hours in a recent case as an example to follow.

Police officers have been instructed to intensify patrolling in susceptible zones, particularly in the evenings. Commissioner Ravinder also asked police stations to liaise closely with schools and colleges to make surroundings around schools safe. He urged spreading awareness of women's and girls' safety, with senior inspectors being asked to play a key role in outreach in their areas.

Emphasizing the role of investigating officers, Ravinder underlined the significance of maintaining minute records of complaints and follow-ups. Officers must immediately visit crime scenes, gather vital evidence, and complete investigations as soon as possible. He mentioned that although an investigation can be suspended because of the absence of evidence, efforts should not be stalled unnecessarily. He was joined by Joint Commissioner Nisar Tamboli in the briefing.

He emphasized a lot on preventive action. Police stations will now keep records of repeat offenders and track their movements. Senior officers will be given regular case status updates to enable effective supervision, and the department will conduct monthly reviews of case progress and conviction rates.

The ‘Police Didi’ initiative remains central to these efforts, aiming to foster trust between police and the community and encouraging women to report crimes without hesitation. Senior inspectors Kavita Isarkar and Seema Surve also attended the review meeting. Surve oversees the ‘Bharosa Cell’, a one-stop crisis center handling domestic violence and other crimes occurring within the home.
