Mirabai Chanu will be leading the Indian team at the coming event of the Asian Weightlifting Championship 2023. In her most recent competition at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Columbia in December, she was placed second in the women's 49kg category. Due to her shoulder and back injuries, she took a five-month rehabilitation program at NIS Patiala. Mirabai will continue her competitions in the 49kg category.
The Asian Weightlifting Championship 2023 will start from May 3 to May 13 in Jinju, South Korea. Mirabai will lead the six-person Indian team during the tournament. The continental championship will be the second round of qualification for the Indian weightlifters for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
The weightlifters qualifying in these events will be able to improve their Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) based on the combined results (snatch + clean + jerk). The list of qualified athletes will be announced by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) after the qualification process for the Paris Olympics ends on April 28, 2024.
Bindiyarani Devi will be competing in the 55kg category during the tournament. So far, India clinched only one medal last year in the Asian Weightlifting Championship held in Manama, Bahrain. In the women's 45kg category, Harshada Garud won the bronze medal.
India's team for the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships:
Women's Category: Bindiyarani Devi (55 kg), Mirabai Chanu (49 kg)
Men's Category: Narayana Ajith (73 kg), Achinta Sheuli (73 kg), Jeremy Lalrinnunga (67 kg), Shubham Todkar (61 kg)
