Madhya Pradesh to Launch India's First Women-Led Cooperative Network
By: Women Entrepreneurs Review Team | Tuesday, 7 July 2026
Madhya Pradesh is set to become the first state in India to launch a large-scale network of women-led cooperative societies, marking a major step towards strengthening women's economic empowerment and expanding the cooperative movement. The initiative, announced by Cooperation Minister Vishvas Kailash Sarang during the Sahakari Saptah celebrations at Apex Bank on July 6, 2026, will officially begin in August 2026.
Key Highlights:
- Madhya Pradesh to launch India’s first women-led cooperative network
- The initiative aims to boost women's employment and economic empowerment
- State strengthens cooperative reforms through digital transformation
The state government aims to place women at the centre of cooperative ownership, management, and governance, enabling them to play a greater role in economic development. By encouraging women to lead cooperative societies, the initiative seeks to generate sustainable employment, improve financial inclusion, and create new entrepreneurial opportunities across Madhya Pradesh.
Addressing the gathering, Sarang said cooperatives have become effective instruments of self-reliance and livelihood generation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of the Union Ministry of Cooperation. He added that the women-led cooperative network would benefit farmers, youth, and economically weaker sections by creating wider access to income-generating opportunities and strengthening the cooperative ecosystem.
The initiative aligns with the Centre's vision of women-led development by integrating women into ownership and decision-making roles within cooperative institutions. Through greater participation in governance and management, the state aims to bridge economic disparities while promoting inclusive growth and community development.
Madhya Pradesh has already established itself as a frontrunner in cooperative reforms and digital transformation. It became the first state in the country to issue online Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs), making agricultural credit more accessible for farmers. The state has also implemented online audits to improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability across cooperative institutions.
Sarang further said Madhya Pradesh is working to emerge as a national leader in the seed sector by leveraging digital technologies and strengthening its cooperative framework. These initiatives are expected to improve agricultural productivity while expanding the reach and effectiveness of cooperative services.
The announcement coincides with rapid developments in India's cooperative sector. On July 6, the Ministry of Cooperation celebrated its fifth Foundation Day at Bharat Mandapam, highlighting progress under the Sahkar Se Samriddhi initiative. As part of the reforms, 50,000 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) have been converted into e-PACS, foundation stones have been laid for 47 grain storage facilities, and new digital platforms, including Sahakar CBS and Sahakar Sahyogi, have been introduced to modernise urban cooperative banks.
With the rollout of the women-led cooperative network, Madhya Pradesh aims to establish a new benchmark for gender-inclusive cooperative development. The initiative is expected to strengthen rural livelihoods, enhance women's financial independence, and reinforce the cooperative sector as a key driver of sustainable and inclusive economic growth while encouraging greater participation of women in leadership and decision-making across the state's cooperative landscape.
