  • Koneru Humpy withdraws from FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament
  • Citing her concern for her personal safety due to the West Asia conflict
  • The tournament is set to commence in Paphos, Cyprus, on March 28

On Sunday, Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy announced her decision to withdraw from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament despite assurances from the organizers that safety precautions have been taken due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

The tournament will take place in Paphos, Cyprus and will start on March 28. This event will determine who will challenge the current chess world champions (D. Gukesh for men and J. Wenjun for women).

Koneru's withdrawal is considered a big loss for India due to her being one of the top contenders for the tournament and for having a chance at winning the Women's World Championship title.

She expressed earlier that she was uncertain about whether she would be able to travel safely to the tournament, and had been considering the best course of action.

Her announcement coincided with a drone strike on a British RAF troop transport in North Africa.
