Indian chess prodigies Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh have advanced to the tiebreaker of the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup final. Following a tough draw in Game 2 played on Sunday, the duo will now face each other in a showdown to be played on Monday in Batumi, Georgia. This marks a key chapter in India’s chess journey as two Indian chess players move to the finals.

The second classical game saw both players choose solid, conventional openings. Playing with the white pieces, Divya began moving aggressively and gained a time advantage over her opponent. Koneru showcased strong resolve as she sacrificed a pawn to seize the initiative. Game 2 ended in a threefold repetition draw, which Humpy accepted.

The duo will now battle one last time on Monday, July 28, in a tie-breaker, which will be played starting with two rapid games at a 15+10 time control. The winner of these games will be named the ultimate winner of the 2025 Women’s World Chess Championship.

India’s premier female chess player, Koneru Humpy, hails from Andhra Pradesh. The 38-year-old chess expert is a seasoned Grandmaster and former Women’s World Chess Champion. Her young yet capable opponent is Divya Deshmukh. The 19-year-old hails from Maharashtra and is an International Master and Woman Grandmaster. Divya’s stellar performance in the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup showcases her growing prowess as a world-class chess player.
