- The healthcare services offered to women and children at King George's Medical University (KGMU), located in Lucknow, will be expanded
- Under one roof, the center will provide complete care for all illnesses affecting women and newborns
The opening of a dedicated Apex Centre for Women and Child Care at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is expected to greatly increase the healthcare services offered to women and children. This brand-new, multi-story facility will address a long-standing need for integrated care by providing complete care for both women and newborns under one roof.
The proposed center will be built on undeveloped land behind Queen Mary's Hospital, which has 340 beds at the moment and is frequently completely booked because of the large volume of patients. When finished, the new structure will have 500 more beds, seven floors, a basement, and two levels of underground parking, which Queen Mary's does not currently offer.
The center's three floors will address different medical needs: the first floor will be devoted to fetal medicine and diagnostics, the second floor to minimally invasive surgeries, and the ground floor to reproductive medicine.
While the fifth floor will focus on high-risk pregnancies with a dedicated maternal intensive care unit, the third and fourth floors will house the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and a general intensive care unit, respectively. Modular operating rooms with cutting-edge surgical equipment will be located on the sixth floor.
By doing away with the current practice of moving critically ill infants to the trauma center's PICU, the facility hopes to keep mothers and newborns together. In addition, it will provide complete diagnostic support and treatment for diseases like obesity, anemia, breast and cervical cancer, and irregular menstruation.
A final hearing is scheduled for July, and KGMU has already won the first round of litigation to clear encroachments at the proposed site. The objective is to offer prompt, specialized care in one place, reaffirming KGMU's dedication to comprehensive healthcare for women and children, said KGMU Vice-Chancellor Soniya Nityanand.
