On International Women's Day, Airbnb is celebrating the expanding community of women hosts and guests who are driving gender equality through entrepreneurship, adventure, and economic empowerment. Aligning with this year’s theme, 'Accelerate Action,' Airbnb acknowledges the significant role women play in shaping India's hospitality sector, utilizing the platform to generate economic opportunities, promote inclusivity, and boost growth.
In India, women hosts account for nearly 30 percent of Airbnb's host community. These women have not only created unique and welcoming experiences for guests but have also seen substantial financial success. In 2024, women hosts in India collectively earned around INR 2.6 billion, with over 56 percent receiving 5-star reviews. Moreover, nearly 35 percent of India's Guest favorite listings are hosted by women, highlighting their outstanding hospitality.
Amanpreet Singh Bajaj, Airbnb's Country Head for India and Southeast Asia, said, "At Airbnb, we're committed to supporting gender equality by providing a platform where women thrive. Our data shows women hosts are excelling in hospitality and gaining financial independence, while women travelers confidently explore the world. This International Women's Day, we recognize the need to do more, and we remain dedicated to empowering women for a more equitable future."
Indian women travelers are also increasingly choosing Airbnb for their diverse travel experiences. Data reveals that millennial women lead in bookings, followed by Gen Z. Most female travelers prefer to travel in pairs or groups, with trips typically lasting between two to six nights, reflecting a desire for short, immersive experiences.
Domestically, Goa was the top choice for Indian women travelers in 2024, followed by Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, and Jaipur. Varanasi saw a remarkable 75 percent increase in bookings from 2023, making it the top trending destination for women, followed by Ahmedabad and Mathura.
For international travel, London was the most popular destination for Indian women in 2024, followed by Dubai, Bangkok, Paris, and Rome. Tbilisi saw a surge in bookings, with nearly a 145 percent increase from 2023, making it the top trending international destination, followed by Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, Bangkok, and Sydney.
As part of the global effort to #AccelerateAction for gender equality, Airbnb is dedicated to providing inclusive opportunities for both women hosts and travelers. The platform continues to empower women economically and support their entrepreneurial ventures in the hospitality industry.
