Indian Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the country's vibrant footwear and leather industry provides employment to a staggering 4.5 million people, with 40% of them being women. Speaking at the prestigious India International Footwear Fair 2023, Goyal shed light on India's impressive global rankings as the second-largest exporter of leather garments, the third-largest in saddlery and harness, and the fourth-largest in leather goods.

Goyal's address was filled with promising initiatives aimed at bolstering the industry's growth and promoting Indian products on the global stage. A notable highlight was the introduction of special Indian footwear sizes, a strategic move to reduce dependence on foreign sizing standards and elevate the status of Indian footwear worldwide.

Encouraging collaborations and joint ventures, Goyal urged stakeholders to explore Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to fuel technological advancements, particularly in the non-leather footwear segment. Such endeavors are expected to bolster exports and further stimulate domestic market growth, solidifying India's position as a leading player in the global footwear industry.

Embracing the essence of regional diversity, Goyal extolled the beauty and craftsmanship of iconic footwear like Kolhapuri from Maharashtra and Mojari from Rajasthan. He envisioned these regional treasures captivating international buyers, bringing India's rich cultural heritage to the global forefront.

To support the industry's development, the government is setting up testing facilities as part of the footwear and leather development program. Additionally, measures have been taken to enhance the ease of doing business, promoting a conducive environment for growth and innovation.

Goyal's impassioned address emphasized the importance of quality, sustainability, and eco-friendly practices within the industry. He called for efficient waste management and innovative designs to thrive in the fiercely competitive global markets, where demand for Indian products is steadily rising.

Collaborations with esteemed institutions like the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) are expected to be instrumental in developing cutting-edge products and technologies. These collaborations will enable the industry to adapt to changing market trends and meet consumer demands effectively.

Overall, Minister Piyush Goyal's vision and initiatives are poised to strengthen India's position in the footwear and leather industry, bolster women's empowerment, and showcase the nation's rich heritage to the world. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, the industry is on the path to becoming a global powerhouse in the years to come.
