India Women suffered their first setback of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign after South Africa Women secured a convincing six-wicket victory in their Group 1 encounter at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Sunday. A brilliant all-round display from Marizanne Kapp proved decisive as the Proteas successfully chased down a target of 159 with five balls to spare. Despite the defeat, India remains second in the Group 1 standings with four points from three matches.

Key Highlights:

  • South Africa beat India by six wickets in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
  • Marizanne Kapp starred with an unbeaten 81 and figures of 2/27
  • India remains second in Group 1 despite their first defeat of the tournament

India opted to bat first after winning the toss and made an aggressive start through openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. The pair helped India race to 59 runs in the powerplay, putting pressure on the South African bowling attack early in the innings

However, the momentum shifted once Smriti departed for 17. Shafali continued her attacking approach and struck 31 from just 15 deliveries before falling to a short ball from Shabnim Ismail. With Yastika Bhatia also dismissed shortly afterwards, India slipped to 67/3 and lost control of the innings.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, playing her 200th T20 International, attempted to stabilise the innings alongside Jemimah Rodrigues. The partnership was short-lived as Rodrigues was dismissed for 12. South Africa maintained pressure throughout the middle overs, preventing India from building substantial stands.

The highest partnership of the innings came between Harmanpreet and Deepti Sharma, who added 33 runs for the fifth wicket. Despite the contribution, neither batter was able to convert their start into a match-defining knock. India eventually finished on 158/7, with Shafali's 31 remaining the highest individual score. Kapp and Ismail were the standout bowlers, claiming two wickets each.

South Africa's chase began cautiously, but India found early breakthroughs through spinner Shree Charani. The youngster struck twice in the final over of the powerplay, removing captain Laura Wolvaardt for 21 and Annerie Dercksen for a duck to leave the Proteas under pressure.

The turning point arrived through a commanding partnership between Tazmin Brits and Kapp. The duo added 97 runs, effectively taking the contest away from India. While Brits provided solid support with 40 from 36 balls, Kapp dominated the scoring and reached her half-century in just 34 deliveries.

India finally ended the partnership when Shafali dismissed Brits in the 17th over. Charani further boosted India's hopes by removing Nadine de Klerk soon after, but South Africa remained firmly in control.

Kapp continued her remarkable innings, producing a mixture of powerful strokes and intelligent placement. She remained unbeaten on 81 from 45 balls, registering the highest T20I score of her career and guiding South Africa across the finish line with confidence. Her contribution with both bat and ball earned her the Player of the Match award and underlined her reputation as one of world cricket’s premier all-rounders. The victory lifted South Africa to third place in Group 1 on four points, level with India but behind on net run rate.
