India highlighted that women play an important role in economic development and governance at the preparatory virtual meeting of the BRICS Women’s Working Group as the chair of the BRICS. Held under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the meeting laid the groundwork for cooperation in areas including women’s leadership, financial and digital inclusion, women entrepreneurs, and women’s participation in climate change and food security.

India reaffirmed its commitment to women-led development and people-centric approach at the first preparatory meeting of the BRICS Women’s Working Group. This initiative keeps women central to its growth initiative.

Resonating with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability,” the discussions revolved around bringing measureable outcomes at forthcoming ministerial engagements. India is pushing for policy mechanisms that consider gender concerns while promoting socio-economic transformation within the member states.

The conference was attended by senior officials from BRICS member countries as well as representatives of governmental organizations and knowledge partners from India, such as UN Women and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. India’s vision and focus received recognition from all the member states, particularly regarding increased cooperation and exchange of knowledge in BRICS.

Additional Secretary Caralyn Khongwar Deshmukh underscored that discussions centred on removing global barriers for women, with an emphasis on increasing their participation in governance and economic spheres. As the dialogue progresses, its conclusions will guide the BRICS Women’s Working Group meeting scheduled for July 6–7, followed by the Ministerial Meeting on July 8–9 in Kochi.
