Freshers & Women Redefining India's Job Migration Trends: Report

By: Women Entrepreneurs Review Team | Monday, 18 May 2026

India is witnessing a major workforce mobility shift, with job-related migration rising by 31.4% percent amid growing participation from more women and entry-level professionals.

According to WorkIndia, an Indian recruitment technology company specializing in blue-collar and entry-level job placements, points out that the shift is driven by the search for higher wages and better employment opportunities between January and April 2026, underscoring a broader shift in workforce mobility and career planning.

Key Highlights

  • Cross-city job applications surged 31.4% as women and freshers pursue better pay and career growth
  • Nearly 1 in 4 workers now seek jobs beyond hometowns, signalling a major workforce mobility shift
  • Women and first-time job seekers are redefining India’s blue- and grey-collar migration trends

India’s evolving labour market is witnessing stronger migration trends among young and entry-level workers, as cross-city job applications from freshers rose 11%.

These results point to changes in the aspirations of employees in the blue and grey collar segments, as workers in labor, administrative, sales, and health care roles become more inclined to move in order to achieve better work prospects. This is indicative of a change in mindset, as migration is now seen as an opportunity for upward mobility.

The study shows that there is an evident increase in the mobility of workers, who have applied to 8.6 million jobs outside their native cities between January and April 2026. This is an impressive jump compared to the previous year when 6.5 million applications were filed by the same period, indicating a yearly growth rate of 31.4 per cent.

"The Indian blue and grey-collar workforce is rewriting the rules of mobility. A woman in Patna applying for a healthcare role in Pune, a fresher in Bhopal applying for an office job in Bengaluru, a salesperson in Surat looking at openings in Hyderabad, this is the new normal.

"Migration has stopped being a male, metro-bound, and last-resort decision. It is now a deliberate career choice being made by millions of Indians, including a fast-growing share of women and first-time job seekers," WorkIndia co-founder and CEO Nilesh Dungarwal added.

The expansion in cross-city job applications is moving at a much faster pace than local hiring activity, with that exceeding same-city application growth by more than 1.5 times. Consequently, 24.1 per cent of workers on the platform are now actively applying for jobs outside their home cities, compared with 22.5 per cent during the previous year.

The report is based on more than 35 million job applications. In sectors that have been dominated by men, women are now showing a greater willingness to move beyond their hometowns for better professional opportunities and financial stability.
