Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday highlighted how Gujarat’s cooperative dairy model has transformed women into successful entrepreneurs while strengthening the rural economy. Speaking at the inauguration of the fully automatic Madhur Dairy milk processing and packaging plant in Dashela village, Gandhinagar. Amit said “state’s dairy sector has significantly improved the financial independence of women”.
The newly inaugurated Madhur Dairy facility, linked to the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd, under the Amul brand, has been put together with an estimated cost around Rs 128 crore. The plant has an initial milk processing capacity of 2.5 lakh litres per day, which can be expanded to 5 lakh litres daily in the future.
Addressing the gathering, Amit stated that nearly 36 lakh women in Gujarat are currently contributing around 3 crore litres of milk every day. He noted that approximately Rs 200 is being directly deposited into their bank accounts daily, strengthening women’s entrepreneurship and economic participation in rural areas.
He also reflected on the remarkable growth of Gujarat’s cooperative dairy movement, which began with only four cooperative societies, processing 6,000 litres of milk and generating a turnover of Rs 7,000. According to Amit, the sector has now achieved a turnover of nearly Rs 7 lakh crore, making it one of India’s most successful cooperative models.
