
Fewer Women Working in Delhi's Service Sector Government; Report

The number of women employed in service sector jobs in Delhi has decreased significantly, according to a report released by the Delhi government on Monday.
The proportion of women in the “professional and technical work” category declined from 28.5 percent in 2020-21 to 21.3 percent in 2022-23.
In terms of wages, the average earnings of salaried women workers in Delhi declined relative to men, with the wage ratio dropping from 1.13 in 2021-22 to 0.87 in 2023-24.
Additionally, the percentage of women either working or willing to work but unable to find suitable employment increased from 11.2 percent in 2017-18 to 14.5 percent in 2023-24.
The report also scrutinized women's representation in the legislature. The share of seats secured by women in the Delhi Assembly Elections fell to 7.14 percent in 2025, a decade low, even as the share of women standing for elections rose from 9.8 percent in 2015 to 13.73 percent. There were 6 women MLAs in 2015; in 2025, the number dipped to 5 of 70.
The report notes a positive movement in terms of social indicators such as the Multidimensional Poverty Index improved a decline in the number of underweight children, and also a decreased maternal mortality ratio.
In terms of the Affordable and Clean Energy target, the percentage of power supplied from renewable sources, which included solar, wind, waste-to-energy, small hydro and hybrid, increased from 0.71 percent in 2015-16 to 27.24 percent in 2022-23.
In addition, the number of Medium and Small Enterprises (MSMEs) in Delhi has increased from 1.78 lakh in 2022-23 to 4.19 lakh in 2023-24.
The number of startups also increased, rising from a little over 3,500 in 2022 to 14,734 startups recognised under the Startup India programme, as of June 2024.
