Rose Angelina M. Kharsyntiew, a Village Level Entrepreneur from Mairang, Meghalaya, was honored at the Digital India@10 national celebration in New Delhi for her significant role in bridging the digital divide in rural India. She founded Rose CSC, providing essential digital services, including government schemes, banking, insurance, telemedicine, and digital literacy. Kharsyntiew's journey from job seeker to respected community leader was celebrated during the 10-year Digital India initiative.
Her work has had a profoundly positive impact on residents, making her center a vital public access point. She also led the 'Stree Swabhiman' initiative, a sanitary pad manufacturing unit, promoting menstrual hygiene awareness and creating employment opportunities for women.
Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Rose Angelina for leading a digital revolution in rural India. He described the importance of how technology can empower and reshape communities.
The Digital India initiative, launched in 2015, has grown exponentially, expanding from 83,000 CSCs to over 5.5 lakh across India. More than 74,000 women are running it, who are instrumental in realizing the vision of inclusive digital governance. Nearly 90 per cent of villages now have access to digital services. The Centre is prioritizing changemakers as key to enhancing digital access in rural India, as the programme enters its next phase with expanded services and free AI training.
