Delhi to Launch 56 Women-Only Electric Bus Services
By: Women Entrepreneurs Review Team | Friday, 17 July 2026
The Delhi government has announced plans to introduce a dedicated network of 56 women-only electric bus services across the national capital to improve the safety, accessibility, and comfort of women travelling on public transport. Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh confirmed the initiative on 16 July, saying the services will primarily cater to working women and college students during peak commuting hours.
Key Highlights
- Delhi to introduce 56 women-only electric bus services
- Network will operate across 28 high-footfall corridors
- Dedicated routes will serve working women and university students
The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has proposed the new network across 28 high-footfall corridors identified for their large number of women commuters. The initiative forms part of the government's broader efforts to strengthen gender-inclusive public transport while promoting sustainable mobility through electric buses.
The proposed network will comprise 30 Ladies Special services operating on 15 busy city routes and 26 University Ladies Special (U-SPL) services covering 13 routes. The university services will connect major residential neighbourhoods with Delhi University's North and South Campuses, along with other leading educational institutions across the city.
According to the Transport Department, the routes were selected after analysing passenger movement patterns and identifying corridors with the highest concentration of women commuters. The government expects the dedicated services to offer a safer and more convenient travel option for women who rely on public transport for work and education.
Speaking about the initiative, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the government remains committed to ensuring that women can travel with safety, dignity, and comfort. He added that the dedicated electric bus network reflects the administration's vision of creating a more inclusive and accessible public transport system while addressing the specific mobility needs of women.
The services will operate exclusively with electric buses, supporting Delhi's efforts to expand its zero-emission public transport fleet. Besides improving commuter safety, the move is expected to contribute to cleaner urban mobility by reducing dependence on conventional fuel-powered buses.
The announcement builds on earlier plans revealed on 11 July, when government officials indicated that around 50 women-only buses would be introduced under the PM e-Drive scheme. The latest proposal expands the network to 56 dedicated services, comprising both city routes and university-focused operations.
Officials believe the initiative will particularly benefit women travelling during busy morning and evening hours, when public transport experiences the highest passenger volumes. Dedicated services are also expected to encourage greater use of public transport among women by offering a more secure commuting environment.
The government has not yet announced the operational launch date for the services. However, the proposal marks a significant step towards strengthening women-focused transport infrastructure in Delhi while supporting the city's transition to an all-electric public transport ecosystem.
