Chandani Wijewardena Makes History as First Woman Acting Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka

Chandani Wijewardena has been appointed as the Acting Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka marking the first time a woman has held this esteemed position. While President Ranil Wickremesinghe was on an official visit to India, President's Secretary Saman Ekanayake made the momentous announcement.
Wijewardena's appointment to this vital role demonstrates the nation's progress in promoting gender equality and empowering women in leadership positions. With an illustrious career spanning back to 1994 when she joined the Sri Lanka Planning Service, Wijewardena has held critical positions within the Treasury and reached the prestigious role of Director General of the Planning Department. Moreover, Wijewardena has contributed her insights and skills to various ministries, serving as the Secretary of the Ministry of Development Strategy and International Trade from 2015 to 2019, actively contributing to the nation's economic development.

A proud alumna of Galle Southland Girls' College, she pursued her Master's degree at Ruhuna University and further expanded her knowledge with a postgraduate degree in Regional Economic Development from The Hague University in the Netherlands.
