  • Cairn Oil & Gas publicized the accomplishments of women weavers in Assam on Women’s Entrepreneurship Day
  • Over 3,200 women have been enabled to become rural entrepreneurs through this initiative

Marking Women's Entrepreneurship Day, Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Ltd., spotlighted the progress of over 3,200 women weavers in Assam who moved from traditional weaving to becoming rural entrepreneurs.

The development has been supported by Cairn's long-term investment in community-led handloom centers in the Golaghat and Jorhat districts.

These training centres, in collaboration with the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission, have been fitted with improved looms, among other modern weaving equipment, alongside structured technical training.

Women weavers from villages like Borchapori and Agchamua, who earlier wove primarily for household use, have now started producing quality gamosas for the Government of Assam's Swanirbhar Naari scheme and are diversifying into other handloom products.

Facilities and guidance on a continuous basis have raised the efficiency at the Borchapori and Agchamua centres by almost 30 percent, according to Cairn. The weavers are now producing a greater range of products including mekhela chadors and shawls.

Many beneficiaries of the scheme have cited positive personal and economic transformation. Mohila Saikia from Borchapori said better machinery has raised her production per day, through which she can weave as many as five gamosas per day.

Cairn said that the initiative aligns with the Viksit Bharat national vision by empowering women-led entrepreneurship and supplementing the growth of rural economies. The handloom centres helped in converting the traditional skills into sustainable livelihood opportunities, thereby strengthening the economic ecosystem in Assam.
