Microsoft founder Bill Gates has praised India’s Namo Drone Didi program, which was launched in 2023 to empower rural women and enhance agricultural efficiency using drone technology. Gates recently shared a video on social media highlighting the program’s success and the inspiring stories of the women leading the change.
During his visit to India last month, he met with three Drone Didis from Bihar—Sangita Devi, Sumintra Devi, and Kajol Kumari who showcased their drone-operating skills and explained how the initiative has transformed their lives and communities. “Flying a drone isn’t easy. It takes a lot of practice and skill. I was lucky to get a lesson from the experts,” Gates said, reflecting on his meeting with the Drone Didis.
He emphasized the agricultural advantages of drone use: faster fertilization, reduced water and fertilizer usage, and improved crop yields. According to Gates, one Drone Didi can cover up to five acres in the time it would take five people to manually fertilize half an acre.
Gates also noted the government's plan to equip drones with advanced sensors and imaging tech for real-time monitoring of crop health, soil moisture, and pest control—enhancing precision farming.
A key strength of the program is its integration with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which provide women with financial and social support. India plans to distribute 15,000 drones to SHGs by the end of next year. Gates highlighted personal success stories, including Kajol Kumari, who now runs a seed and fertilizer shop thanks to SHG support and Drone Didi training. Sangita Devi, now a proud auto-rickshaw owner, gaining financial independence. Sumintra Devi, who has become a role model, reshaping gender norms in her community.
“It’s amazing how one piece of technology can reshape an entire community,” Gates said, inspired by the confidence and ambition of the women he met. “This is just the beginning.” The Namo Drone Didi program is a strong example of how technology, when paired with grassroots empowerment, can drive meaningful, scalable change.
