Belstar Microfinance Ltd, an RBI-registered Non-Banking Financial Company–Microfinance Institution (NBFC-MFI), has highlighted the transformative impact of collateral-free credit through the success story of Mounika, a 35-year-old entrepreneur from rural Telangana who built a thriving laundry business with the support of a small business loan.

Key Highlights

  • Belstar Microfinance helped Mounika start a laundry business in rural Telangana
  • The venture improved her family's income and funded her son's education
  • She now mentors other women and plans to expand her enterprise

Like many families in rural India, Mounika's household depended solely on her husband's daily-wage earnings. Although she had learned laundry work from her husband, she lacked the financial resources to purchase the equipment needed to establish her own business.

Belstar Microfinance stepped in with livelihood-oriented financial assistance, enabling her to buy an iron box and other essential supplies to launch a laundry service in her village. Through consistent service and dedication, she gradually built a loyal customer base, creating a stable source of income for her family.

The additional earnings significantly improved the family's financial security and enabled Mounika to enrol her son in a better school. Her entrepreneurial journey has since evolved beyond personal success, as she now mentors other women in her community who aspire to start small businesses.

Reflecting on her experience, Mounika said the financial support from Belstar opened the door to turning her skills into a meaningful livelihood. She added that she now takes pride in supporting her family while encouraging other women in her village to pursue their own entrepreneurial ambitions.

Looking ahead, Mounika plans to expand her enterprise by opening a dedicated laundry shop in the local market. She also hopes to establish a training and employment centre that will equip more women with income-generating skills and create additional livelihood opportunities within her community.

Belstar said Mounika's journey reflects the broader role of India's microfinance sector in promoting financial inclusion and women's economic empowerment. By offering collateral-free loans, financial literacy, and community-based lending models, microfinance institutions are helping first-generation entrepreneurs transition from uncertain informal employment to sustainable businesses.

The company primarily serves low-income women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), providing access to credit for enterprise development without the need for traditional collateral. This model aims to strengthen household incomes while encouraging entrepreneurship in underserved rural and semi-urban regions.

A subsidiary of Muthoot Finance, Belstar Microfinance was established in 2008 and focuses on balancing financial growth with social development. The company supports women-led enterprises across multiple states through its livelihood-focused lending programmes and continues to expand digital financial inclusion initiatives.
