Assam CM Highlights Impact of Women-Focused Schemes

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated that the introduction of women-centric government programs in the past few years has resulted in the upliftment of the stature, safety, and economically liberated status of women in the state.

While distributing the seed capital for entrepreneurship in the distribution initiative under Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) in the assembly constituencies of Lamding and Barpeta, addressing the people, the Chief Minister stated, “This initiative is also a move to encourage women entrepreneurship in order to develop the economy of our state, Assam."

Speaking at a gathering of women entrepreneurs at Srimanta Sankardeva Nagar playground in Hojai, Sarma stated that cheques from MMUA have reached at least 12 lakh women in 50 Assembly constituencies. He also clarified that the distribution would be finished in all constituencies by February 15, next year.

The government is set to disburse Rs 10,000 for each of the 32 lakh women under the first phase of the project with an allocation of Rs 3,200 crore. Financial empowerment and the involvement of women in economic activities are the objectives underlining this project according to the CM.

Sarma further listed other initiatives adopted by the government for the welfare of women, which included initiatives in combating crimes, arresting child marriages, and initiatives for enhanced education for girls.

The initiatives he listed included Nijut Moina program, Free Admissions, Cycles for class IX students and Scooters for meritious Higher Secondary students.

He emphasized the scaling up of Orunodoi, a woman-centric welfare scheme, under which the support amount has been increased from Rs 830 to Rs 1,250 on a monthly basis, while the beneficiaries have risen from 18 lakh to approximately 40 lakh. The widow pensions have also been hiked to Rs 1,250.

Additionally, the Chief Minister said that the assistance provided by the MMUA is meant to be the first step towards achieving self-reliance, with the plan of increasing funding being provided in the next phases for those who utilize the funding appropriately. Furthermore, the assistance scheme is in line with the national vision of women-led growth.

Additionally, Sarma announced that the historical Vrindabani Vastra, which lies in a museum in the city of London, would be relocated to Assam to display the weaving tradition of the state in the year 2027.
