- Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja has announced a crackdown on crimes against women
- The campaign will also be directed at obscene and hate posts against women on social media
Rayapati Sailaja, the newly elected Chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh State Women's Commission, declared a strict clampdown on crimes against women, including offensive and misogynist content against women on social media. In her first address after assuming office on Monday, Sailaja clarified that anyone publishing such content would be in for a serious treatment, with police cooperation being invoked to ensure that the culprits face the music.
Rayapati, the head of the Amaravati farmers' agitation against the YSRCP government, reiterated her vow to empower women beyond party lines. "Stringent action will be initiated on anyone contravening the rights of women. Any injustice will not be neglected," she asserted.
She condemned the former commission for ignoring complaints in the past five years and promised to resolve all outstanding cases. "Those who circulate obscene material against women must reform their ways or pay strict penalties," she added, indicating that outstanding issues would be escalated to the National Women's Commission if necessary.
To facilitate long-term societal transformation, Rayapati said she would introduce awareness classes in schools to instill respect for women right from an early age. She invited the public to inform her of any injustice against women, assuring they would take immediate action. A new website is also being set up to enable victims to lodge complaints online and follow up on their progress.
Rayapati thanked Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, Union Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, and other leaders for putting faith in her, assuring she would make the Commission effective and respectable once again.
