Andhra Pradesh Unveils Free Maternal Transport Service
By: Women Entrepreneurs Review Team | Tuesday, 21 July 2026
The Andhra Pradesh government is set to enhance maternal and neonatal healthcare by introducing a dedicated fleet of 500 Thalli-Bidda Express vehicles, aimed at ensuring safe and free transportation for expectant mothers, women who have recently given birth, and their newborn babies. The initiative is expected to serve nearly 2.75 lakh beneficiaries every year, making healthcare more accessible for families across the state.
Key Highlights
- State to introduce a dedicated maternal transport fleet
- Nearly 2.75 lakh women expected to benefit annually
- Vehicles equipped for safe and monitored medical travel
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the vehicles ahead of their launch, assessing whether they met the requirements for safe and comfortable travel. During the inspection, he examined the vehicles' interior layout, accessibility features, and emergency preparedness measures, and approved the campaign branding that will accompany the rollout. The branding is intended to familiarise residents with the service and encourage eligible women to make use of it.
The new transport system has been designed to bridge one of the key challenges faced by many women travelling safely during and immediately after pregnancy. Once operational, the vehicles will provide complimentary transport for mothers discharged from government hospitals, allowing them to return home with their newborns without worrying about travel arrangements or costs. Each journey will also accommodate a family attendant, ensuring additional support for the mother.
Beyond postnatal care, the service will extend to women with high-risk pregnancies who require regular hospital visits. Expectant mothers identified with complications, including severe anaemia and other medical concerns, will be able to access transportation for scheduled examinations and treatment, helping improve continuity of care and encouraging timely medical intervention.
To ensure passenger safety, the vehicles have been fitted with features tailored to maternal healthcare needs. These include secure seating arrangements, supportive boarding facilities, climate-controlled interiors and emergency response equipment. Real-time GPS tracking will allow authorities to monitor every trip, improve operational efficiency and respond quickly if assistance is required.
Officials also presented the Chief Minister with the implementation roadmap, outlining fleet operations, monitoring systems and district-level deployment plans. The government intends to station the vehicles across Andhra Pradesh so that women in both urban and rural regions can access the service without delay.
The launch of the Thalli-Bidda Express fleet reflects Andhra Pradesh's growing emphasis on improving public healthcare services for women and children. By removing transportation barriers and ensuring safer journeys during pregnancy and after childbirth, the initiative seeks to encourage institutional healthcare, support better maternal outcomes, and strengthen the state's healthcare delivery network.
