AI Upskilling Powers Women's STEM Participation: EY India
By: WE Staff | Thursday, 22 January 2026
- Artificial intelligence-based upskilling is steadily increasing the number of women engaged in the STEM disciplines in India
- The trend is being driven by the increasing role of Generative AI and Digital Learning solutions
According to the EY India report, “Breaking the Code: The Rise of Women in India’s STEM Landscape: Women are emerging as Leaders in STEM Education Powered by AI Up skilling”
AI-driven up skilling has been a major catalyst for women to enter the Indian STEM community. Today, the number of women participating in STEM up skilling has increased from 22 percent in 2018-19 to 33 percent as of 2023. Other breakthroughs like generative AI have also witnessed a 195 percent rise in women enrolling for courses annually by 2025 for women.
Though the number of companies hiring women in STEM fields increased in the fiscal year 2023-24, with 62 percent of companies registering growth, the report highlights the need for a balanced number of women in the sector since only a certain percentage of them are in the industry.
Women occupy only 36 percent of the STEM industry in the technology and information technology sector, as well as the electric mobility/automotive industry, with a total of 13 percent compared to the heavy manufacturing/ engineering industry, which only has a total of 3 percent for the fiscal year 2023-24. The total participation of women in the Indian workforce for the fiscal year 2023-24 stood at 41.7 percent.
