- Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed ₹10,000 seed capital to 52,469 women
- Programme covers 19.4 lakh women across 80 Assembly constituencies
- Orunodoi scheme support and ₹10 crore for playground upgrades were also announced
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the distribution of seed capital under the Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurship Mission on January 13, 2026, covering Karimganj North, Katigorah, and Barkhola constituencies. A total of 52,469 women received Rs 10,000 each, part of a state-wide initiative that has so far supported 19.4 lakh women across 80 constituencies.
Addressing gatherings at Sribhumi, Rajpur, and Silcoorie playgrounds, the CM highlighted that the programme aims to make 32 lakh women self-reliant entrepreneurs or “Lakhpati Baideus.” He explained that if the seed capital is collectively deposited in Self-Help Groups, a corpus of Rs 1 lakh can be created to start or expand businesses. Effective use of the initial funds could make beneficiaries eligible for further support of Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 in later phases.
The Chief Minister also announced additional support under the Orunodoi scheme, with 2,000 more women in each constituency to receive Rs 8,000 on February 20, and declared Rs 10 crore for upgrading the DSA Playground. He praised top-earning women entrepreneurs in each constituency as examples of what determination and government support can achieve.
CM Himanta emphasized that while Assam has implemented various welfare programmes, this mission is exclusively for women. Out of 40 lakh women associated with Self-Help Groups in the state, 8 lakh have already become Lakhpati Baideus, and the mission seeks to transform the remaining 32 lakh. The events were attended by senior ministers, MPs, MLAs, district officials, and thousands of beneficiaries, underlining Assam’s focus on women’s economic empowerment and inclusive growth.
