Managing Director, C R Narayana Rao

Architecture in today’s day and age serves as a dialogue between imagination and functionality. Progressive design firms view each project as a dialogue between vision and viability. Catering to the needs of modern-day consumers, contemporary architectural designs embody a seamless blend of innovation and technical depth.

Great architecture begins with a conviction that designs go beyond shapes and aesthetics, rather they become the art of possibility. Building a career on this vision and bringing more than three decades of architectural expertise, Sumitra Ravindranath has been successfully leading projects across diverse sectors.

A third-generation architect, Sumitra Ravindranath joined C R Narayana Rao (CRN) as an associate and has today achieved the coveted role of the Managing Director where she leads a 120 people strong multidisciplinary team.

Noted as a recognized leader and Fellow of the Indian Institute of Architects, she balances creative vision with practical execution. Sumitra’s visionary approach ensures that each project is executed with a high-level of creativity, functionality, and is delivered with excellence to the highest standards.

What inspired you to foray into the field of architecture? Tell us about your educational journey in the architecture space.

My journey in architecture began long before any formal education, it began at home. Growing up in a family of architects, design was not just something I studied later; it was part of my everyday language and environment. I completed my undergraduate degree in 1989, followed by a Master’s from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991. Returning to India and joining the practice felt like a natural continuation of that journey, an alignment between passion and purpose. I often say that I did not choose architecture; in many ways, it chose me.

As a third-generation architect, I see my work not just as a profession but as a continuation of a legacy. Joining our family firm, C R Narayana Rao, now known simply as CRN was both a privilege and a responsibility. Founded by my grandfather, the firm has grown and evolved with each generation, adapting to its time while staying true to its core values. For me, that legacy isn’t about inheritance, it is about stewardship: carrying forward a vision, shaping it for the future, and ensuring it remains as relevant and inspiring as ever.

How did your time at your Alma Mater, Anna University impact your growth as a professional? Which key life lessons did you imbibe at Anna University?

I learned early on that there is rarely a single way to solve a problem. Architecture, by its very nature, is not about finding the one “correct” answer, it is about exploring possibilities. It is a creative and deeply subjective discipline, where multiple perspectives can coexist and still lead to meaningful outcomes. This realization taught me to appreciate diversity of thought in design, leadership and collaboration.

My years in architecture school reinforced this belief, that different viewpoints can be valid and complementary. It was a shift from an exam-driven mindset to one that values curiosity, empathy, and open dialogue. That philosophy continues to guide me today, reminding me that great ideas emerge when we create space for multiple voices to be heard.

Take us through your professional journey. What areas of expertise have you developed as a leader in architecture over the past three decades in the industry?

Joining CRN at the entry level, with no privileges or shortcuts, remains one of the most valuable lessons of my life. Starting out in the studio and working my way up gave me a first-hand understanding of how the firm truly operates. I spent time on construction sites, observing how drawings evolve into real structures. That practical exposure shaped my leadership philosophy, and reinforced the importance of precision, collaboration, and design integrity. As I grew from an associate to now serving as Managing Director, I have had the privilege of leading a large pool of talented and multidisciplinary team of professionals. I learnt to balance the big picture with attention to detail, to think strategically while staying rooted in execution.

Leadership is about creating the right environment for people to grow. By investing in our teams and caring for their well-being, we have built a culture of loyalty and low attrition and the firm, in turn, continues to thrive through their commitment and excellence.

Introduce us to C R Narayana Rao (Consultants) and the company’s growth journey so far.

CRN’s journey began in 1945 as a small firm. Today it has expanded from a modest practice to a leading firm with diverse functional and focussed teams. Through continuous dedication and hard work, we have earned international as well as nationwide recognition and are successful in maintaining a broad portfolio of projects over varied typologies. As early as 2005, we earned the ISO certification, making us one of the few architectural firms with a formal quality system. Our process-driven approach ensures seamless project delivery, allowing clients to get consistent results.

At CRN, we are partners in shaping the future of the built environment. Our strength is in being a one-stop consulting practice that seamlessly integrates design, engineering, commissioning, and construction supervision. We are constantly pushing boundaries, adopting and exploring newer technologies, materials, and methods, to ensure that CRN remains at the cutting edge of design and engineering innovation.

As an architect, which industry best practices do you follow to ensure positive project outcomes? What is your approach to client engagement?

I follow a management and execution system that draws strength from global best practices while remaining deeply rooted in our own culture of accountability and excellence. I am committed to sustainability, teamwork, and disciplined delivery. I alongside my leadership team stay hands-on, right from the start of every engagement to ensure that the foundation of trust and alignment is set. This gives our clients the confidence that we are personally invested in their success.

Enduring success is never an accident, it’s the outcome of hard work, persistence, and the courage to stay the course when others give up

CRN blends creative intuition with process-driven precision, bringing rigour and efficiency to execution without losing sight of the human and creative essence of design.

Looking back at your professional journey, which milestones stand out? What is your “success mantra”?

One of the most defining moments in my career was being appointed as the Project Architect for a landmark Government of India initiative that began in 2000 and reached completion in 2004. Seeing it inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India was deeply fulfilling. It went on to win the International Award for Intelligent Building of the Year. The fact that it was peer-reviewed made the recognition truly special. Receiving the award in New York is one of the my cherished milestones.

Recently, I led the design and execution of the LuLu Mall Project in Trivandrum which has been awarded the “Outstanding Infrastructure Project” by the Indian Concrete Institute, a leading Industry Body.

I take immense pride in the Launch View Gallery Project at ISRO’s Sriharikota launch facility, a symbol of India’s growing space ambitions. Designed to host thousands of visitors witnessing rocket launches, it blends precision engineering with architectural emotion. For us, it wasn’t just about creating a structure but about crafting an experience that celebrates India’s scientific spirit.

I firmly believe there is no substitute for hard work and integrity of purpose. True success is never accidental, it is built over time through commitment, consistency, and perseverance. Confidence, patience, and persistence, when combined with conviction, ultimately shapes success.
