Priya MK: Driving Science-Led Growth in Nutraceutical Business Development
Priya MK
Head of Business Development, Katra Phytochem
Bangalore, Karnataka
In today’s fast-evolving business landscape, the Head of Business Development stands at the forefront of growth and transformation. Far beyond driving revenue, these leaders shape strategic direction, uncover emerging opportunities, and translate innovation into tangible market success.
Their role demands a rare balance of insight and execution - connecting science, product, and customer needs to build sustainable competitive advantage. Priya MK, Head of Business Development at Katra Phytochem, embodies this dynamic leadership.
With a career deeply anchored in food and nutrition, she brings a strong academic foundation, holding a postgraduate Diploma in Food Analysis and Quality Assurance, a Master’s in Biotechnology, and an MBA.
Her early professional journey included a brief stint in the pharmaceutical sector, but it was the nutraceutical industry that truly aligned with her passion. Over time, she developed a clear perspective on modern health challenges, recognizing that while food delivers essential macronutrients, deficiencies in micronutrients often lead to long-term health concerns.
In an era defined by fast-paced lifestyles, these nutritional gaps have become increasingly common across all age groups.
This realization became a defining moment in her career, steering her toward nutritional supplements as a means to create meaningful impact. Her decision to join Katra Phytochem was driven by the company’s strong commitment to scientific research and its deep focus on product understanding.
The alignment of product development, innovation, purpose, and science offered her the ideal platform to contribute and lead.
I believe alignment begins with moving beyond the role of a traditional ingredient supplier and positioning myself as a solution provider
Today, Priya MK represents a new generation of business development leaders, those who not only drive growth but also shape industries by aligning science-backed innovation with real-world health needs. Let’s read.
What key strategies drive your business growth in this sector?
One of my core strategies is maintaining a sharp focus rather than spreading efforts across too many products. I strongly believe in going deep into selected ingredients and building leadership in those areas, instead of offering multiple 'me-too' solutions. In a highly competitive market, differentiation is critical. I invest significant time in understanding evolving consumer trends and identifying real market needs.
This allows me to align our offerings with what truly matters to customers. Equally important is ensuring that our solutions are backed by strong scientific evidence and innovation. For me, sustainable growth doesn’t come from expanding widely, but from building depth, credibility, and meaningful value in chosen segments.
Which trends in the nutritional industry are shaping your approach?
One of the biggest shifts I see is the rise in consumer awareness. Today, people are far more proactive about their health rather than waiting to react to issues. They understand the role of nutrition in long-term wellness, which is significantly influencing how I approach the market.
I also see a strong move away from traditional pills and capsules toward more convenient and engaging innovative delivery formats like gummies, jellies, stick packs, effervescent tablets, and ready-to-drink shots that fit seamlessly into modern lifestyles.
Additionally, growing focus areas such as healthy ageing, cognitive health, stress management, gut health, and metabolic wellness are shaping my strategy, as these evolving needs are redefining how nutraceutical solutions are developed and delivered.
How do you align your offerings with evolving health and nutrition demands?
I believe alignment begins with moving beyond the role of a traditional ingredient supplier and positioning myself as a solution provider. Today, success depends on how well we understand and respond to the specific needs of brand owners.
I work closely with them to co-create concepts, develop customized solutions, and explore opportunities for co-branding. This collaborative approach allows us to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving market. If I focus only on selling ingredients, it becomes a price-driven game with limited differentiation.
However, by offering concept-led, value-driven solutions, I can create a stronger market position, build long-term partnerships, and deliver meaningful innovation that truly meets changing health and nutrition demands.
Can you share a key initiative that strengthened your market presence?
One of the most impactful initiatives I have driven is a strong focus on deep scientific research and evidence-based validation. Rather than limiting ingredients to their traditional uses, I explored broader applications. For instance, while lutein is widely known for eye health, the strategy was to expand its positioning to include cognitive health, skin wellness, and addressing digital eye strain from prolonged screen exposure.
To support this, I ensured our work was backed by clinical studies, peer-reviewed publications, and patents. This combination of innovation and robust scientific substantiation has helped me build stronger credibility in the market, differentiate our offerings, and significantly enhance our overall presence and trust among customers of XanMax.
How does innovation influence your business development strategy?
Innovation is at the core of my business development strategy, as it shifts the approach from a push model to a pull-driven one. I believe that without innovation, products quickly become commodities, leading to intense price competition. With moderate innovation, some differentiation is possible, but true leadership comes from deep, meaningful innovation and complete traceability.
I focus on enhancing product value through advanced formulations, versatile delivery formats, and strong clinical validation. For instance, enabling an ingredient to be incorporated into beverages, stick packs, gummies or shots increases its usability and appeal. When this is supported by stability studies and credible clinical claims, it naturally creates demand, allowing the product to attract customers rather than relying solely on active selling efforts.
What challenges do you face in this industry, and how do you address them?
One of the key challenges I face is the intense competition driven by rising consumer demand and rapid product development. Today, many products are shaped by market demand rather than emerging purely from R&D, which makes the landscape highly dynamic. Even well-established ingredients like curcumin face competition from newer alternatives offering lower dosages or cost advantages.
To navigate this, I focus on thorough market analysis before developing any product. I evaluate market size, competitive positioning, regulatory acceptance, and evolving consumer preferences. I also pay close attention to regional nuances, such as the growing preference for vegetarian or vegan products in India, ensuring our offerings remain relevant, competitive, and widely accepted.
What does this recognition mean to you, and what is your future vision?
This recognition is both an honour and a responsibility for me. It reflects not just a personal milestone, but also the broader impact of my work in bridging innovation with real market needs. Going forward, I aim to continue developing science-backed, consumer-centric solutions that translate research into meaningful, real-world outcomes.
I am also passionate about contributing to India’s position as a global hub for nutraceutical innovation by integrating its rich Ayurvedic heritage with modern scientific advancements. At the same time, I hope to inspire and support more women to take on leadership roles across R&D, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship, strengthening the industry with diverse perspectives and capabilities.
