Renowned for its academic excellence, research capabilities, and emphasis on analytical thinking, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has consistently nurtured leaders, entrepreneurs, scientists, and professionals who have made significant contributions across industries.
Its legacy of fostering intellectual curiosity and problemsolving has positioned IIT Roorkee as one of the country’s foremost centres of excellence. Over the decades, IIT Roorkee’s alumni network has emerged as a powerful force driving innovation and leadership worldwide.
Graduates of the institution have distinguished themselves in fields ranging from engineering and science to business, entrepreneurship, public service, and technology. United by a spirit of excellence and a commitment to creating meaningful impact, IIT Roorkee alumni continue to shape industries and inspire future generations through their achievements.
Among these accomplished alumni is Medhavi Pande, Founder of Kalaava, whose entrepreneurial journey reflects the institute’s ethos of innovation and purposeful leadership. Holding a Master’s degree in Laser Physics from IIT Roorkee, she began her professional journey in the hospitality sector and went on to head sales for the acclaimed Kumarakom Lake Resort in Kerala.
Her role enabled her to travel extensively and engage with international travel professionals, providing her with deep insights into global perceptions of India as a destination.
During these interactions, she recognized that India’s tourism narrative was often confined to destinations such as Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Goa, while numerous hidden gems and exceptional boutique properties across the country remained unexplored.
Driven by the desire to showcase these lesser-known treasures, she founded Kalaava with a clear vision: to bring authentic and extraordinary experiences to the forefront and enable travelers to discover a different side of India. Through Kalaava, Medhavi Pande continues to champion the idea of helping the world discover the undiscovered. Let’s read.
I believe in working with weekly, monthly, and quarterly rhythms. Since hospitality is a service-oriented industry, staying responsive and ensuring seamless delivery are essential
How did your experience at IIT Roorkee shape your problem-solving approach and entrepreneurial journey?
My time at IIT Roorkee gave me a disciplined way of thinking and the confidence to believe that every problem has a solution. It taught me to question assumptions and approach challenges with curiosity and determination. Although I moved from Laser Physics into hospitality and travel, I always believed that problem-solving skills are universal.
Many people questioned this transition, but IIT Roorkee had instilled in me the confidence to adapt and find answers. That mindset has been instrumental in shaping my entrepreneurial journey and continues to guide me in navigating new opportunities and challenges.
What key decisions in the early years of Kalaava helped build a strong and sustainable foundation?
One of the most important decisions I made was to be selective about the properties we represented. From the beginning, I wanted Kalaava to reflect values such as sustainability, authenticity, and meaningful experiences rooted in local culture. There were many financially attractive opportunities, but not all aligned with our vision.
Turning them down was not always easy, especially in the early stages, but I chose to stay committed to our philosophy. I believe that remaining true to our purpose and carefully curating our portfolio have been key factors behind Kalaava's long-term growth and sustainability.
What trends do you believe will shape the future of the travel and hospitality industry?
Technology and social media have transformed the travel landscape in very positive ways. Earlier, visibility was largely dominated by established destinations and large hotel brands. Today, smaller properties and offbeat destinations have the opportunity to showcase themselves on an equal platform. This democratization of visibility has benefited businesses like ours and enabled us to connect directly with travelers.
Going forward, technology will continue to play a vital role in customer engagement and business growth. I believe staying aligned with changing consumer behavior and embracing innovation will be essential for remaining relevant and competitive.
How do you balance long-term strategy with daily execution while keeping Kalaava agile and future-ready?
I believe in working with weekly, monthly, and quarterly rhythms. Since hospitality is a service-oriented industry, staying responsive and ensuring seamless delivery are essential. On a weekly basis, I stay closely engaged with our partner properties and travel trade relationships, solving issues in real time.
On a broader level, I constantly evaluate where the business is headed and what emerging trends deserve attention. Staying close to travelers, partners, and industry conversations helps us remain agile. This balance between execution and strategic thinking ensures that Kalaava continues to evolve and stay prepared for the future.
How do you evaluate opportunities and make important business decisions?
I see risk as an opportunity to learn and innovate. Whenever a new opportunity comes my way, I first ask whether it aligns with what Kalaava stands for. We represent distinctive experiences and work with partners who deeply understand hospitality. If an opportunity has the potential to dilute our identity, I do not pursue it, regardless of how attractive it may seem financially.
For me, clarity of purpose is more important than short-term gains. I believe that making decisions based on values and vision helps create sustainable growth and allows innovation to flourish in the right direction.
What legacy do you hope to create through Kalaava, and what advice would you offer aspiring women entrepreneurs?
Through Kalaava, I hope to play a meaningful role in bringing India's hidden gems to the global stage. Beyond commercial success, I want to celebrate the country's rich culture, communities, and unique hospitality experiences. Even if I help travelers discover a few extraordinary destinations, I would consider that a worthwhile contribution.
My advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs is to follow their passion and embrace unconventional paths with confidence. Building meaningful relationships and earning trust are equally important. Stay true to your values, think long term, and remember that confidence and positivity can help you overcome any challenge.
