Below is an excerpt of Leng Wie Mun’s exclusive interaction with Women Entrepreneurs Review magazine.

What are the key aspects of your personal and professional journey?

A journey marked by significant milestones, the shift within my practice found its defining moment amid the pandemic. The impact of this global crisis did not just reshape industries, it redefined possibilities. Surprisingly, the pandemic proved a silver lining, unlocking avenues for global market access. Cryptocurrency, Fintech laws and regulations, and Offshore frameworks aligned seamlessly with this transformation. With tools like Zoom transcending geographical limits, engagement with clients beyond my Malaysian jurisdiction became not just feasible but a pivotal aspect of my professional evolution.

Give us a glimpse of your educational journey. What inspired your entry into the field of law?

Having read law and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of London made me realize my passion for law and the need for me to pursue my interest in the letters of law. Hence I embarked on a Master’s programme with the University of Malaya and secured my master’s degree as soon as passed the Certificate of Legal Practice which is akin to the Bar Exams.

To expand my credentials, I secured a diploma in commercial arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) with accreditation from the UK, London.

Beyond that, my professional scope includes my roles as a registered trademark agent and an HRDF-certified trainer under Malaysia’s Human Resource Department.

To add to my journey, last year I was enrolled in the Ministry of Law of Singapore, officially positioning myself as a registered Foreign Counsel in Singapore.

What are the primary legal skills and knowledge you offer?

Expertise spans several areas, but four stand out. Litigation shaped the foundation, with 16 years immersed in its practice. The journey continues, refining skills in a field that remains integral.

Beyond courtroom disputes, Fintech and Technology Law carves a distinct niche. Cryptocurrency Regulations, Compliance Frameworks, ICO application, white paper drafting, and legal opinions, each facet aligns with a deep-rooted familiarity. Long before mainstream recognition, Cryptocurrency Law had already become a personal pursuit for me. Delving into its regulatory and technical dimensions was unavoidable since I am passionate about its complexity.

Offshore legal matters form another pillar, which is a domain cultivated over five years. My engagement stretches across multiple jurisdictions, such as the British Virgin Islands, Seychelles, Marshall Islands, Singapore Offshore, and Labuan Offshore, each bringing a unique legal landscape. Corporate law remains a fundamental pillar, but Fintech and Offshore Regulations stand apart. In an evolving space where many still grapple with cryptocurrency and tokenomics, these are the areas that truly define and distinguish my practice.

Leng wie mun believes that law knows no borders, and it is important to adapt, evolve, and lead

Can you give us an overview of Kevin and Co. and share the roles and responsibilities you handle as the Partner for Corporate and Fintech Law at the firm?

Kevin and Co. began its journey 16 years ago, establishing itself as a boutique law firm with a strong focus on two primary areas, namely litigation and corporate law. In terms of litigation, Kevin and Co. operate with maturity, taking on cases across an extensive spectrum. From criminal legal work to complex disputes, we assist clients with virtually anything. Our firm also serves as a panel solicitor for the U.S. Embassy, reinforcing our commitment to legal excellence.

The pandemic played a pivotal role in shaping our philosophy. Since our inception, we embraced the concept of 'borderless legal service', ensuring no geographical limits in providing our legal services. Today, we advise clients from the U.S., Dubai, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and various offshore jurisdictions. In an era where compliance transcends borders, we provide expert guidance to navigate the evolving global regulatory landscape. As a Partner, my responsibilities extend far beyond legal practice. I juggle multiple roles including business development, sales, marketing, administration, and finance, also overseeing branches, managing corporate clients from IPOs to ICOs, and crafting the firm's blueprint for expansion. Additionally, financial control is a key aspect of my role, ensuring cost efficiency while maximizing profitability. In essence, my shoulders carry an all-in-one responsibility, steering Kevin & Co. toward sustained growth and global outreach.

How do you stay updated and adapt to evolving industry trends and regulations?

I think staying connected with top leaders in the relevant industry is crucial. Engaging with experts helps me stay aligned with industry trends and regulations. Attending seminars and conferences is a key part of this, whether in Fintech, Insolvency, or other areas of law. Learning from top minds allows me to adapt to evolving developments and regulatory changes.

Clients also serve as valuable sources of knowledge. Since they operate within the industry, they can provide firsthand insights into the latest trends, helping me understand shifting patterns and adapt accordingly. Reading plays a vital role in staying informed. I subscribe to various news sources, follow updates from organizations, and learn from leading law firms. Writing is equally important. To remain at the forefront, my partners and I are working on textbooks in areas of our expertise such as Fintech and Criminal Law.

Through learning, listening, attending events, and writing, I ensure I stay ahead in the industry.

Reflecting on your professional journey, what are the most significant milestones you have achieved?

For me, the biggest win in my professional journey revolves around expanding beyond my jurisdiction and reaching a global community. As a practicing solicitor in Malaysia, being able to provide legal services internationally is a significant milestone. Previously, legal practitioners were bound by jurisdictional constraints. However, with Fintech and Cryptocurrency Regulations, those boundaries have faded. Now, I can assist clients from various countries, such as Dubai by helping them navigate Cryptocurrency Regulations and Compliance.

This shift has allowed me to extend my expertise beyond Malaysia and Singapore, breaking the traditional limitations of legal practice. Today, I work with clients from the UAE, Indonesia, Vietnam, and even Finland. What is even more exciting is that I get to work with many experts from different countries in Fintech regulations and compliance for our clients. With that, I consider my biggest victory to be the ability to offer top-tier legal services globally, without restrictions. It is truly fulfilling to witness my practice evolving beyond borders and making an impact on an international scale.

As a business leader, what is your ‘success mantra’?

For me, the ultimate success mantra is to keep learning. Without this mindset, I would not have been able to expand beyond Malaysia and serve international clients. Even now, it still feels surreal to have worked with so many offshore and overseas clients.

Continuous learning has allowed me to understand cryptocurrency, Family Offices, and Offshore jurisdictions. I have gained insights into distinct legal frameworks, such as the differences between the British Virgin Islands and Marshall Islands Laws. Since the law is constantly evolving, I firmly believe that 'change is the rule that never changes'. Embracing lifelong learning is essential for staying ahead.
