Could you share a bit about your educational background and what inspired you to specialize in veterinary science, particularly as a surgeon?

I graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) from the University of Melbourne in 2011 and subsequently passed the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE). My commitment to continuous learning led me to complete a Graduate Diploma in Traditional Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine, as well as four additional orthopedic courses. My passion for veterinary science was driven by a desire to enhance animal health. Witnessing the recovery of patients post-surgery, where some go from being unable to walk to moving freely within days, reinforced my focus on orthopedics and surgery. This experience highlighted the profound impact of high-level care and treatment. Further training in acupuncture has enabled me to offer holistic treatments that complement surgical interventions, enhancing overall patient recovery.

Can you share a memorable case or patient experience with us?

One notable case involved a patient who presented with a fractured right hindlimb and limping on her left hindlimb due to nerve damage. After repairing the fracture, she was able to walk normally on her right hindlimb the very next day. We supplemented her treatment with acupuncture every three days and nerve supplements. Remarkably, within two weeks, she was walking comfortably on both hindlimbs and even jumping within three weeks. The positive outcome and the gratitude of her owners were truly rewarding.

Another memorable case was a cat that had been hit by a car years earlier and was struggling with difficulty walking and dragging both hindlimbs. After just two weeks of acupuncture and supplements, she showed significant improvement in her mobility. By six weeks of treatment, she was even able to jump onto a chair. It was incredibly gratifying to enhance her quality of life and well-being.

Passion Veterinary Clinic was established with the vision of providing outstanding veterinary care through a combination of advanced surgical techniques, internal medicine, and holistic therapies. We have special interest in orthopedic surgery and acupuncture, focusing on complex fracture repairs and integrating acupuncture to support recovery and overall well-being.

To ensure we maintain our high standards of care, we have invested in cutting-edge equipment, including intraoperative digital X-ray, complete dental suites, Ligasure vessel sealers, and in-house blood testing machines. This investment in advanced technology enables us to meet immediate medical needs while also supporting long-term health with a comprehensive and effective treatment approach.

As a veterinary surgeon at Passion Veterinary Clinic, what procedures and conditions do you specialize in?

At Passion Veterinary Clinic, we handle a range of procedures including soft tissue surgeries such as foreign body removal, bladder stone extraction, lumpectomies, and cesarean sections, as well as fracture repairs and joint surgeries. We also provide advanced diagnostic imaging with digital X-rays and ultrasound. Beyond surgical care, we address osteoarthritis, joint issues, and back pain through acupuncture, offering a holistic approach that complements our orthopedic treatments and supports the overall health of our patients.

What do you consider the most significant challenges in your current role, and how do you address them?

A major challenge in my role is balancing work with family responsibilities, ensuring that I work efficiently while also dedicating time to my family. Additionally, keeping up with the rapid advancements in veterinary medicine while managing a busy clinic presents another challenge. To tackle these issues, I focus on continuous professional development for myself and my team, fostering an environment of ongoing learning to stay current with medical advancements.

Highlight some of the major professional milestones you’ve achieved in your career and share your success mantra.

Key milestones in my career include the successful adoption of advanced orthopedic techniques and the recognition of Passion Veterinary Clinic for integrating surgery with holistic care. A significant moment was my role as Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Veterinary Association, which expanded my perspective and allowed me to collaborate with the government to enhance Animal Welfare guidelines and support the veterinary community. My success mantra revolves around a dedication to continuous learning, a patient-centered approach, and the integration of innovative treatments with compassionate care. This philosophy has been crucial in achieving positive outcomes and advancing the standards of veterinary practice.
