Kaushika Shah: Leading Banking Operations with Purpose and People at the Core
Kaushika Shah
Head - Bank Operations, Police Bank
Australia
Leadership journeys are not always built through perfect career paths. For Kaushika Shah, Head of Bank Operations at Police Bank, success has been shaped by resilience, adaptability, continuous learning and a strong belief in people.
With nearly three decades of leadership experience across banking, superannuation, investments and insurance, she has built a reputation for operational excellence, strategic execution and member-focused leadership.
Originally trained as a Chemistry teacher, Kaushika migrated to Australia as a skilled migrant and rebuilt her professional life from the ground up. After taking a career break to raise her newborn twins, she re-entered the workforce in an entry-level data entry role at AMP.
Rather than seeing this as a setback, she treated it as an opportunity to learn, contribute and grow. That mindset became the foundation of her career.
Over the next 28 years, Kaushika progressed through increasingly senior leadership roles, including Team Leader, Manager, Business Unit Manager, Head of Banking and Projects, and Head of Remediation.
She led large multidisciplinary teams of more than 100 people and managed complex operational functions across financial services. Her journey reflects perseverance, purpose and the belief that no role is too small when approached with the right attitude.
My vision is to build a proactive, continuously improving function that creates value for members and the business
After an accomplished career, what inspired you to join Police Bank and lead its Bank Operations function?
After nearly 28 years with AMP, I was not simply looking for another role; I was looking for greater purpose. Police Bank appealed to me because of its genuine member-first culture and commitment to doing the right thing.
That strongly aligned with my own values. The role also brought together the experience I had built across banking, lending operations, remediation, financial crime and customer service.
What is your long-term vision for Bank Operations at Police Bank?
I believe bank operations should be far more than the engine room of the organisation. My vision is to build a proactive, continuously improving function that creates value for members and the business.
Every process should start with one question: how does this improve the member experience while maintaining strong governance? Modern operations are about bringing together people, technology, data and risk management to deliver safer, simpler and more reliable banking.
How are you driving transformation while ensuring strong governance and compliance?
For me, transformation is not just about new technology. It is about improving processes, empowering people and embedding better ways of working. Compliance cannot sit outside day-to-day operations; it needs to be part of how we work.
Whether we are strengthening financial crime controls, enhancing lending processes or redesigning workflows, the focus is always on improving member outcomes, reducing risk and building operational resilience.
The best transformation is often the one members barely notice because banking simply becomes easier, safer and more dependable. At Police Bank, we continue to explore automation, data-driven decision-making and process improvement to support better service while maintaining strong controls.
One area I am particularly proud of is the work we are doing to strengthen member protection. This includes uplifting financial crime operations, improving fraud and scam prevention, supporting vulnerable members through hardship and collections, and building processes that are clear, controlled and member-focused. For me, operational excellence is not only about efficiency; it is about trust, protection and measurable impact.
What have been the most significant challenges in your leadership journey?
Financial services have changed significantly over my career. I have led remediation programs, transformation initiatives and operational change during periods of increasing regulation and customer expectation.
More recently, the rapid rise of scams and financial crime has created new challenges for all banks. We need to protect customers while still delivering a smooth banking experience.
The lesson I have learned is to simplify complexity. I focus on understanding root causes, using data to guide decisions, bringing the right people together and asking whether there is a better way. Strong leadership is not about having every answer; it is about creating clarity, accountability and confidence so teams can deliver meaningful outcomes.
What advice would you offer aspiring banking professionals, particularly women building leadership careers?
My journey has taught me that there is no perfect career path. I started over in a new country, stepped away from work to raise twins and returned in an entry-level role. None of those experiences limited me; they shaped me. Every role taught me something valuable, and every challenge made me a stronger leader.
My advice is to stay curious, keep learning, volunteer for opportunities that stretch you and build strong relationships. For women especially, do not wait until you meet every requirement before putting yourself forward.
Leadership is about solving problems, creating opportunities and helping others succeed. Some of my proudest achievements have been seeing people grow in confidence and capability.
