When Uma Devi arrived with the expressive Naan Nee from Madras, it heralded bold and socially conscious things in Tamil cinema. An accomplished poet and an assistant professor of Tamil literature, she shunned convention with the lyrics-themes of feminism, Dalit identity, and social justice.
Her associations with Pa. Ranjith's Movies-Women have broken the stereotype and women's lyrics. Thus, Uma Devi has created a strong base for Tamil film music under evolution.
