Education is still one of most effective means to uplift one's social and economic status. However, not everyone gets equal access to it. UNESCO's latest figures show that a staggering 244 million children and young people globally do not attend school. According to the World Bank, 70 percent of 10-year-olds in developing countries are unable to read and understand an age-appropriate text. These include a disproportionate number of girls.

In India, even though enrolment rates have increased, challenges such as dropping out, learning gaps and unavailability of quality education still remain critical challenges, especially in rural regions and among low-income communities.

Social entrepreneurship has been a major player in a broad landscape of broken systemic gaps, particularly women leaders, who in fact are creating innovative, community-based solutions that surpass educational models only. Social entrepreneurs like Urvashi Sahni and Safeena Husain are great examples of how focused interventions can change access and results for the most disadvantaged people.

Women Entrepreneurs Review team highlights the work of five women leaders who are changing the face of education for the underprivileged, paving the way for them to be included, empowered and also contributing to the overall development of the society in the long run.

Let’s meet them and their ventures.
