Barbara Baumgartner: Mission-Driven Approach To Fortify Medical Aviation In The Middle East
Barbara Baumgartner
Managing Director, FAI Aviation Services
Dubai
When life delivers its toughest blows— whether through personal loss, health crises, financial upheaval, or systemic limitations—some women don’t just recover; they rise to rebuild the world around them. Armed with instinct, empathy, and resilience, they transform adversity into purpose. Such is the journey of aviation entrepreneur Barbara Baumgartner.
Arriving in the Middle East at just 25, Barbara began her professional path within a Saudi family office, an experience that sharpened her business acumen and leadership capabilities. But it was a deeply personal crisis, her husband's medical emergency abroad that altered her trajectory.
Experiencing firsthand the logistical and emotional complexity of arranging urgent medical repatriation, she recognized a serious gap in regional air ambulance services. That moment ignited a mission.
Today, as Managing Director of FAI Aviation Services DMCC, the Middle East arm of Germany’s FAI rent-a-jet GmbH, Barbara has been instrumental in scaling the group’s air ambulance operations.
Under her leadership, FAI’s Dubai office has evolved into a 24/7 medical aviation hub, offering both air ambulance flights and commercial medical escort services. Her team manages each patient’s journey from bedside to bedside, coordinating medical readiness, aircraft logistics, and international compliance.
But Barbara’s impact extends beyond aviation.
Driven by insight and a strong sense of social responsibility, she’s become a vocal advocate and investor in women-led innovation. As a member of the Women Angel Investor Network (WAIN) and the Investment Committee at Mindshift Capital, the region’s first female-led VC fund, she has supported over 40 startups across HealthTech, EdTech, FinTech, and Wellness. For her, these investments are meaningful commitments to empower women whose ideas are often rooted in lived experiences and unmet needs.
Barbara’s career is a testament to resilience and purpose. From transforming personal tragedy into business transformation to advancing a more equitable future, she continues to build bridges where there were once barriers.
How has your experience been as a leader in aviation and venture capital?
It’s been both fulfilling and continuously challenging. Leading FAI Aviation Services DMCC since 2003, I’ve helped shape our medical aviation services in the Middle East and beyond. Aviation is an unforgiving field, there is no room for error. Precision, resilience, and decisive leadership are essential.
What’s most rewarding is building a high-performing, predominantly female team in a male-dominated sector. Two-thirds of our Dubai workforce are women. I lead by example—hands-on, focused on patient care, and committed to excellence.
The learning never stops. From cross-border missions to adapting to regulatory shifts, aviation teaches you agility. My mindset is to persist, keep evolving, and surround yourself with people who elevate you.
I treat each day as a new day & look forward to new experiences, new lessons, new thought processes & just keep pushing forward
The investment landscape remains challenging for women.
In 2021, only 2.2 percent of global VC funding went to startups founded solely by women. In MENA, it was just 0.5% in 2023. We need more than talk, we need action. I believe if women don’t support women, real change will never happen.
Funding is important, but mentorship and access are just as critical. I invest in and mentor tech startups to help build an ecosystem where women thrive and lead. It’s about more than closing funding gaps—it’s about empowerment and sustainability.
What business lessons have empowered your journey?
Adaptability. Whether it's COVID-19, geopolitical shifts, or new competition, success requires the ability to pivot quickly. Stay close to the market, keep listening, and stay connected. In-person networking still matters.
Diversification is another key. At FAI, we go beyond air ambulance, we also operate aircraft for VIP charters, organ transport, NGO missions and offer aircraft management, aircraft maintenance and refurbishment.
Founders should think similarly: avoid dependency on one revenue stream and build long-term strategies to scale sustainably.
Tell us about FAI Aviation Services and your role.
FAI Aviation Services, based in Dubai, is the regional hub of FAI rent-a-jet GmbH. We provide dedicated ICU-equipped air ambulance services and commercial medical escort flights with airlines like Emirates and Etihad.
Supported by a strong team, I oversee everything from operations and business development to financials and strategic partnerships. It’s a high-responsibility role, especially when families trust us in life-critical situations.
What are the toughest business challenges you face?
I’ve overcome gender bias throughout my career. Often the only woman at the table, I rely on my experience and industry knowledge. With over 20 years of experience in air ambulance operations across the Middle East, I’ve developed the cultural awareness needed to succeed here.
The work is complex, unscheduled ICU flights, geopolitical volatility, and frequent last-minute changes. These affect planning, costs, and service delivery.
Our floating aircraft base model allows flexibility and faster response times. Through agility and strategic planning, we turn challenges into results.
What’s been your success mantra?
Lead with empathy. Understand what matters to people, clients, team members, and patients. Empathy enables smart management, builds trust, and creates a deeper sense of purpose. We’re not just flying patients; we’re delivering hope and care in their most vulnerable moments.
