Anandibai Joshi, Kadambini Ganguly, Rukhmabai Raut, Haimabati Sen, Muthulakshmi Reddy and Mary Poonen Lukose were some of the trailblazers who broke the shackles of patriarchy to become the first women doctors in the Indian History during 1800s. They were not merely doctors or life savers, but also social reformers who have fought against the suppression and cruelty against women and many other social issues and anti-social believes both the genders were facing regarding the health sector at that time. Today, their stories or names are barely remembered, but their struggles have given us unmemorable number of women doctors, surgeons and medical officers. Today, women doctors or medical officers have become as common as their male counter  parts.

Indian women are now found to outnumber men in admissions to medical colleges. Over the last five years, India has produced over 4,500 more female doctors than male ones. They have also proved that they could be outstanding & excellent in their profession and could rise into and handle any higher position of any organization. We can see women managing the whole hospital as medical officers. In this role, they are responsible for the whole clinical operations and management of the hospital, being a mediator between the authority and staff. Our country has medical officers working in private & government hospitals as well as military hospitals. According to statistics, there are 975 Women Medical Officers and 127 Women Dental Officers in the Indian Army.
