Texas Instruments Empowers Women in Engineering through WiSH Mentoring Program in India
By: WE Staff | Tuesday, 11 July 2023
Texas Instruments (TI), a leading semiconductor company, is hosting the second year of its Women in Semiconductors and Hardware (WiSH) initiative, a month-long mentoring program for female engineering students in India. The program seeks to provoke more women to seek core engineering careers by providing them with exposure to and mentoring in the semiconductor and hardware industry. This year, TI has doubled its efforts by hosting 100 students from 22 colleges, a significant increase from the previous year. The overwhelming response of 950 applications reflects the strong demand for opportunities in the field.
During the month-long program, participants have the opportunity to engage in various activities that foster their growth and understanding of the industry. They take part in simulation projects, visit laboratories, engage in technical discussions, and attend networking sessions with leaders at TI. Additionally, in the final week, the students get to experience TI's Bengaluru campus firsthand, further immersing themselves in the world of semiconductor technology.
The WiSH initiative addresses the gender gap in STEM fields, particularly in the semiconductor industry, where only 14% of women currently make up the workforce in India. TI recognizes the importance of encouraging female students early in their academic and professional journey to connect with science and technology. By providing them with hands-on experiences and mentoring, TI hopes to inspire and develop an aptitude for semiconductors and hardware among the participants. Through initiatives like WiSH, TI aims to challenge and transform the status quo, enabling more women to pursue successful careers in the industry.
Santhosh Kumar, President, and Managing Director of Texas Instruments India, emphasizes the significance of the WiSH program in breaking down barriers and empowering women in STEM. He states, "The gender gap in STEM is wide, with only 14% of women making it to the STEM workforce in India. The WiSH program aims at encouraging more women to pursue a career in the semiconductor industry, challenge and transform the status quo." By fostering an environment where female students can connect with science and technology and providing them with valuable experiences, TI hopes to cultivate a passion for semiconductors and inspire the next generation of women in engineering.
The WiSH program is a testament to TI's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and empowering women in the technology sector. By doubling the number of participants and expanding its offerings, TI demonstrates its dedication to addressing the gender gap and creating opportunities for aspiring female engineers. Through mentorship, hands-on learning, and exposure to industry leaders, the WiSH program equips young women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to thrive in the semiconductor and hardware industry.
As the WiSH initiative continues to make strides in empowering women, Texas Instruments remains at the forefront of promoting gender equality and diversity in STEM. By providing platforms for mentorship and fostering a supportive environment, TI paves the way for a more inclusive and innovative future in the field of engineering.
