Rising Lung Cancer Among Women in Bengaluru, Experts Call for Urgent Public Health Measures
By: WE Staff | Wednesday, 2 August 2023
Bengaluru, known as the IT capital of India, is witnessing a worrisome surge in lung cancer cases among women and non-smokers. According to recent studies conducted by the Indian Cancer Society, the incidence of lung cancer in female residents of Bengaluru has escalated by a significant 20% over the past five years. Health experts are expressing concern over this concerning pattern and emphasizing the need for immediate public health measures to address the issue.
Several factors seem to be contributing to this alarming trend. An increase in the number of female smokers in Bengaluru has been observed, and since smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, this rise in female smokers is likely playing a significant role in the surge of cases. Additionally, exposure to secondhand smoke and pollution in the city's poor air quality are also known risk factors for lung cancer, further exacerbating the situation for women in Bengaluru.
Lung cancer is now the third most common cancer among women in India, trailing behind breast and cervical cancer. Tobacco smoking remains the primary risk factor for lung cancer, necessitating the implementation of awareness campaigns and preventive measures to combat the issue. The age-standardized incidence rate of lung cancer in Indian women stands at 2.7 per 100,000, and unfortunately, the 5-year survival rate is a mere 13%, highlighting the urgency of early detection and timely intervention.
Health experts stress the importance of quitting smoking, avoiding secondhand smoke, and reducing air pollution to mitigate the risk of lung cancer. Robust policies and comprehensive awareness campaigns are also essential in reversing the increasing trend and improving the overall well-being of women in Bengaluru.
As this health concern continues to grow, urgent action is needed to safeguard the health of women in the city. By raising awareness, implementing preventive measures, and promoting a healthier lifestyle, Bengaluru can strive to reduce the burden of lung cancer and protect its residents' well-being.
