  • Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India’s energy sector has witnessed a transformative shift
  • Clean fuel access is becoming a major driving force behind empowerment, particularly among women
  • The initiative has been explained as a milestone in India's journey towards clean energy, providing women with dignity and convenience

India's energy sector has seen a dramatic shift in the PM Modi regime, and access to clean fuel has become a major empowerment agent—especially among women, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Monday.

Emphasizing the achievements, the minister informed that 10.33 crore women have brought dignity and convenience to their lives with LPG connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) and referred to it as a pillar of India's clean energy initiative.

Apart from LPG, 1.51 crore households are now served by piped natural gas (PNG). The City Gas Distribution (CGD) network has grown to reach 96 percent of the land area and 99 percent of the population of India, increasing energy availability further.

The minister also highlighted the increased involvement of women at leadership positions in the energy sector. Women are being trained and hired in increasing numbers in fields like biogas plants, retail fuel stations, and LPG distribution. In 2024-25, 42,800 tons of compressed biogas (CBG) was bought, again showing how serious the government is about green energy.

"Today, the Indian woman is not just a beneficiary—she is a catalyst of the energy future of the country," Hardeep Singh said. He pointed out that India's energy initiatives have not only made cleaner fuels available but also unlocked social and economic empowerment opportunities for women.

On India's larger energy agenda, the minister reiterates India's consistent move towards oil independence. At the hands of PM Modi, 99 percent of erstwhile limited 'No-Go' zones have now been freed up. Close to 1 million square kilometers of offshore space is now open to oilfield exploration, which is triggering interest from indigenous as well as foreign energy companies.

The next Round X of Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) is likely to create new milestones for investment and participation, securing India's energy future even better.
