Phulkari-Women of Amritsar hosts an annual Phulkari Bazaar which is geared toward supporting Women owned/operated small businesses.
It is a forum to connect with other women owned small businesses through networking, a business-to-business platform (B2B), and idea exchanges (for businesses), as well as a business-to-consumer platform (B2C) for businesses to connect directly with potential customers as buyers, increase awareness of their brands and increase support for their companies.
This year, over 60 local brands participated from Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Delhi-NCR, with a variety of products such as woolen and apparel, handcrafted wooden furniture, jewelry, vintage arts and crafts, decorative items made from organic materials, etc.
An example of one of the booths was Just Clay where 26-year-old Vandit Jain, a Jalandhar-based artist, displayed his work. Vandit has Down syndrome and has been creating slab pots for a little over one year.
He has a variety of ceramic items including coasters, candle holders, DIY paint kits, and hand-painted flower pots in his collection. His mother, Preeti, one of the founders of the company, stated that pottery started out as a hobby for him but quickly became a medium for expressing his creativity.
In addition to sustainable brands, including soy wax candles and fiber decor items made through the weaving process using plastic bottles, the event was attended by Neelam from Delhi, an artist with over 30 years of experience, who operates out of a studio with 30 artists. She stated that there was much interest amongst consumers regarding eco-friendly products.
Meenakshi Khanna is Phulkari's President, stated "The purpose of this bazaar is to assist businesses that are led by women and to create better markets for small businesses that are operated from one's home."
Most stalls were established by women entrepreneurs, local artisans or creative homemakers who transitioned into being an entrepreneur at this event. These stalls featured many different artistic as well as sustainable types of products and there were workshops held on the event related to design, make-up, music and art.
