The Indian Navy received over 80,000 applications from female candidates as the registration for the Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR) and Matric Recruit (MR) concluded on Wednesday (August 3, 2022), according to the officials. The Agnipath scheme will be used to hire the aforementioned profiles.
"Indian Navy`s SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) & MR (Matric Recruit) registration process towards the #AgnipathRecruitmentScheme has been completed. 9.55 lakh Agniveer applicants including 82,000 women aspirants have registered," tweeted the official handle of Indian Navy.
The Indian Navy announced its intention to hire women sailors on June 20 through the recently unveiled Agnipath recruitment scheme, with a focus on gender-neutrality in all of its branches.
The Army, Air Force, and Navy have all had female officers, but this will be the first time that women will be eligible for PBOR (Personnel Below Officers' Rank) jobs.
Vice Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of Personnel, said in a tri-service press conference at the Ministry of Defence here on Sunday that "we are still formulating the exact number of women sailors to be recruited through the Agnipath scheme." He added that the training of the first batch of Agniveers will begin in November of this year.
"Indian Navy has 30 women officers at present sailing on different Indian Navy ships. We have decided that under the Agnipath scheme, we will recruit women also. They will be deployed on warships also," he added.
He added that preparations are being made at INS Chilka in Odisha, the Indian Navy's primary training facility, to accommodate the female sailors.
"The first naval "Agniveers" will begin arriving at the training facility INS Chilka, Odisha, starting on November 21 of this year. This is open to both male and female Agniveers, "said Tripathi.
In accordance with the "transformative" Agnipath scheme, which Union Minister Rajanath Singh unveiled on June 14 in front of the heads of the three services, young people between the ages of 17 and 21 can join the armed forces for a four-year period, with the option to keep 25% of them for an additional 15 years. The Center subsequently raised the maximum age to 23 for 2022 hiring.
On June 14, the Union Cabinet also approved the Agnipath programme, and the young people chosen through this programme would be referred to as Agniveers.
46,000 Agniveers would be hired this year, according to the government's announcement. In order to meet upcoming difficulties, it had been said that the armed forces will have "a younger, fitter, varied profile."
In order to assuage concerns, there have been protests against the Agnipath initiative in various areas, and the government has promised support measures.
