An important step has been taken towards boosting inclusive welfare mechanisms by the Ministry of Minority Affairs. In an official release the ministry informed that it has launched a new module of the UMEED Portal, which helps widows, divorced women, and orphans to seek maintenance support from certain Waqf properties.
This newly added functionality allows widows, divorced women, and orphans to ask for maintenance support from Waqf-alal-aulad properties, in accordance with Rule 8(2) of the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Rules, 2025, framed under a section of the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995.
With the inclusion of this new module a significant and forward-looking move has been made to ensure that the Waqf administration becomes more people-centric, transparent and digitally enabled, said the Ministry of Minority Affairs said. "The system is designed to seamlessly facilitate financial benefits to eligible beneficiaries from the income generated through Waqf-alal-aulad, a special category of endowment created for the benefit of family members and other deserving individuals," stated the release.
Some of the significant features of the module are, Aadhaar-based authentication of beneficiary details, digital process of application and approval process which will be managed by the respective state/UT Waqf Boards and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of maintenance support to beneficiaries' bank accounts, said the statement.
These new features will help in ensuring a transparent, efficient, and accountable process in delivering financial support. These features will also remove delays and reduce administrative barriers, said the release.
