Netherlands Embassy has chosen fifteen women from Jharkhand as the ‘strong women in India’ for their service to the needy people during the pandemic.

The announcement was made during the webinar attended by the deputy head of mission Netherlands, Anneke Adema and the state’s secretary for rural development Manish Ranjan.

Among the selected women, most of them had lost their jobs during the pandemic but distributed masks, sanitary pads and food grains in different districts.

Chuman Kumari, a twenty-year-old maid used to work in Delhi when the pandemic struck. After returning home, she got in contact with Bal Kalyan Singh, a non-government organisation.

Kumari also distributed essential materials among needy families in the Khunti district. She said, “I am happy that my efforts are recognised and awarded.”

A group of 30 girls received training as a security guard in December 2020 out of which a majority had come back to state after losing jobs. Most of them are in much better condition and have secured jobs in different private and public organisations, she added.

Twenty-six-year-old Basanti Kacchap was deployed as a security guard in a government school after being rescued from trafficking several years ago. She also lost her job but used the time to serve families facing child labour, child marriage and chances of trafficking. The girls have distributed dry ration, sanitary pads and masks among over 2,600 needy families in Koderma, Ranchi, Khunti and Esat Singhbhum districts under the banner of BKS.

The deputy head of the embassy also said that BKS is playing an important role in preventing trafficking of women from Jharkhand. For the prevention of human trafficking, the embassy has listed BKS among the best six organisations
