Senior lawyer Sabita Bhandari was appointed as Attorney General of Nepal on Sunday, the first woman to serve in this role.

She was appointed by President Ramchandra Paudel, following the recommendation of acting Prime Minister Sushila Karki, under a notice from the President's Office.

Sabita, who had been an information commissioner at the National Information Commission, is taking over from Ramesh Badal, who had stepped down after the government change, a Nepali tradition.

Her appointment comes against the backdrop of mass unrest in the nation, spearheaded by young people what is also being termed as the "protest of Gen Z."

The protests kicked off on September 8, after a temporary ban imposed on social media, and have witnessed tens of thousands of protesters marching across Nepal.

The protesters have complained about corruption, poverty, and the luxurious life of children from political elite families, also known as "nepo kids."

The protests turned violent with protesters vandalizing the parliament building and the police fired shots. This resulted in Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli resigning and leaving his official residence.

On September 12, 73-year-old Sushila Karki (2016-2017), Nepal's first and only female chief justice of its Supreme Court, was appointed interim Prime Minister. She garnered a reputation for her hard line on corruption in government.

There will be a new parliamentary election on March 5.
