Shanti Gupta Centre for Women’s Studies, MIER College of Education, commemorated ‘Women’s Equality Day’ by inaugurating the “Gender Champions Club”.
Prof Vishav Raksha, Head, Department of Sociology and Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, was the chief guest.
Dr Renu Gupta, Chairperson MIER, was the guest of honour. In addition to giving a welcome speech, Dr. Bharti Tandon, convener and nodal teacher for the Gender Champions Club, also aired a documentary on the motivational journey of Droupadi Murmu, the 15th President of India.
The Gender Champions Club's goal and mission were discussed by Rupa Gupta, the Center's director, who also emphasised the duties that Gender Champions would be carrying out in this capacity.
The club was officially launched by lighting the lamp and awarding badges to the club's members and gender champions. The club members swore to work tirelessly and sincerely to advance the cause of gender equality. Neha Sharma from the M Ed department and Surya Khajuria from B Ed Special Education gave the opening remarks as two up-and-coming gender champions.
Prof. Vishav Raksha underlined in her statements as president that gender champions are our ambassadors who will advance the cause of gender equality by interacting with and sensitising people not only in educational institutions but also at home.
Even though we are talking about gender equality, she said, women still have to deal with issues like patriarchy, stereotypes, job discrimination, subpar healthcare, lack of legal protections, etc. She placed particular emphasis on three issues that women and girls now face: safety worries, cyber security, and media.
The topic of Women's Equality Day this year is "Hard Won-Not Done," keeping in mind that gender equality needs to be attained in all fields, according to Dr. Renu Gupta, Chairperson MIER. She stressed that learning about previous women's struggles for equality in the past is a great opportunity presented by Women's Equality Day.
