  • India were docked 5% of their match fee by the ICC for a slow over-rate during the Women's World Cup group stage match against Australia on October 12 in Visakhapatnam
  • The team won the game, chasing a record 331, with three wickets remaining and an over to spare

As a penalty for a slow over-rate in their ICC Women's World Cup group-stage game against Australia in Visakhapatnam on October 12, India's squad was charged 5 percent of their match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC). India then pursued the record total of 331 to secure the game by three wickets, with one over in hand.

After granting time allowances, when determining the charge, it said that India was one over short of the over-rate called for.

The fine was levied pursuant to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel for a minimum over-rate offence and by Michell Pereira of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.

India's skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur, accepted the penalty, and conceded the offence to the match referee, so the formal hearing could be avoided.

Sue Redfern and Nimali Perera, the field match officials, brought the charge, whereas Kim Cotton was the third umpire and Jacquline Williams was the fourth official.

However, it was a run-filled and thrilling match, even with the disciplinary penalty. Australia chased down the strong Indian total of 330 runs, the record successful chase in women's ODI history. Australian captain Alyssa Healy amassed 142 runs from 107 balls (with 21 fours and 3 sixes in her first game as captain).

Alyssa was dismissed by Sneh Rana, providing India with occasional glimpses of hope, while Ellyse Perry came back from retirement injured and stumbling at the crease to complete the successful chase not out on 47 from 52 balls.

For India, Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana became the first female player to reach 1,000 runs in ODIs in a calendar year. Smriti's knock had placed India in a position of scoring a decent total for the game that was not sufficient in preventing Australia from chasing the record total in terms of runs scored.
