India’s women’s hockey team delivered a statement performance in Auckland, defeating hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final to win the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2025-26. The triumph marked India’s second Nations Cup title and secured their return to the FIH Pro League for the 2026-27 season. Remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, the Indian side showcased resilience, defensive discipline, and clinical finishing to cap off a memorable campaign that could prove pivotal ahead of the upcoming World Cup and the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Key Highlights:

  • India beat New Zealand 2-0 to win the FIH Women’s Nations Cup 2025-26
  • The unbeaten champions secured promotion to the 2026-27 FIH Pro League
  • Hockey India announced cash rewards of ₹3 lakh for players and ₹1.5 lakh for support staff

India set the tone early in the final, taking the lead in just the fourth minute. Navneet Kaur won and converted a penalty corner with a powerful strike that beat the New Zealand defence and gave her side an ideal start. The visitors continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Sunelita Toppo expertly deflected Deepika’s effort from a penalty corner, extending India’s lead to 2-0.

New Zealand enjoyed significant possession during parts of the match and attempted to fight their way back into the contest. However, India remained composed and organised, particularly in defence. The second quarter saw both teams create opportunities, but neither could add to the scoreline before half-time.

India’s defensive strength became even more evident after the break. The team denied the hosts any clear scoring chances in the third quarter and maintained control despite sustained pressure. Goalkeeper Savita played a crucial role late in the match, producing an important save from a New Zealand penalty corner in the fourth quarter to preserve India’s clean sheet and secure the title.

The victory completed a flawless tournament for India. The team opened their campaign with wins over the USA, Japan, and Uruguay during the group stage before producing a dominant 6-0 victory against Chile in the semi-final. Their triumph over New Zealand in the final ensured they finished the competition unbeaten.

Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo scored the decisive goals in the final, while Lalremsiami earned the Player of the Match award for her influential display. Drag-flick specialist Deepika finished as the joint top scorer of the tournament with six goals, sharing the honour with Ashley Sessa of the USA.

Captain Salima Tete described the achievement as the result of immense hard work and commitment. She noted that securing promotion back to the Pro League had been a major objective and said the title would provide valuable confidence ahead of future international challenges, including World Cup preparations.

The victory carries added significance because the 2026-27 FIH Pro League will serve as a crucial pathway towards qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Having been relegated from the Pro League after the 2024-25 season, India’s return represents a remarkable redemption story. To celebrate the achievement, Hockey India announced cash rewards of ₹3 lakh for each player and ₹1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff, recognising a campaign that combined determination, excellence, and a clear vision for the future.
