India’s Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, highlighted the growing role of Global South cooperation in advancing women’s empowerment during the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-70) at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Addressing the event titled “Women-Led Development and South-South Cooperation – Success Stories from the IBSA Fund,” Savitri emphasized the impact of the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Fund in promoting sustainable and inclusive development. Established in 2004, the IBSA Fund has supported more than 50 development projects across nearly 40 countries, focusing on poverty alleviation, women’s empowerment, and community development.

The fund is very supportive of the initiatives which are aimed to strengthen women's leadership, participation and decision making power in line with India's vision of women led development, the minister said.

Savitri highlighted key projects through her description of a Liberian initiative which aimed to strengthen the Women Legislative Caucus. The project develops women legislators through its three objectives which include establishing gender-responsive governance systems and developing oversight systems and eliminating discriminatory laws. The initiative aims to raise public understanding of legal changes while promoting democratic participation through inclusive methods.

She also touched upon a proposed project in floriculture in Jordan aimed at promoting women economically using environmentally friendly methods. One of the projects in the initiative will be the installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) wastewater re-use system for 60 greenhouses and a five-hectare nursery. In total, the project will support 150 women with floriculture and business training, and help establish 50 micro-businesses led by women.

On the internal initiatives, Savitri said the Union Budget 2025–26 has dedicated nearly USD 60 billion (₹5.01 lakh crore) to gender budgeting, which is an increase of more than eight per cent from the previous year.

During CSW-70, Savitri also engaged in bilateral talks with Sindisiwe Chikunga regarding the enhancement of cooperation under the IBSA Dialogue Forum and to extend cooperation on various platforms, including G20 and BRICS, especially in the area of digital public infrastructure and women-related initiatives.
