NTPC Ltd, India's largest integrated energy firm, has been recognised for its commitment to the empowerment of girls, particularly those from communities near NTPC facilities. It also intends to carry out its GEM programme in around 35 project areas this year. In 2018, NTPC launched the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) programme, which has helped to empower disadvantaged girls in the neighbourhood of its project sites.
GEM has empowered girls all around the country by teaching them about fundamental education, health, and self-defense. NTPC hopes to break the glass ceiling for these women and dispel the myth of female foeticide in rural areas with this initiative.
The initiative has provided a platform for children to demonstrate their abilities and talents. GEM (Girl Empowerment Mission) benefited 2,300 girls in 20 project areas by 2019. NTPC oversaw the enrollment of girl students aged 10 to 12 years old from various project areas, including Dadri, Korba, Farakka, Sipat, Singrauli, Kawas, Ramagundam, Simhadri, and others. These female students have been exposed to a variety of subjects, including yoga, self-defense, fine arts, and more. These girls have imbibed a creative mind set and also learnt the importance of team spirit.
GEM ensures that the girl child develops into a well-rounded adult with a strong sense of curiosity as well as excellent communication and social skills.
It also encourages girls to develop their creativity, improve their psychological, social, and emotional development, and make learning a fun, engaging, and memorable experience. The company has focused on pioneering Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices that have had a long-term, sustainable impact on people's lives since its inception. NTPC will continue to lead such initiatives and make a difference in the lives of marginalized people, ensuring that they live with dignity.
NTPC announced the hiring of its first all-female Engineering Executive Trainees (EETs) last year in order to realise its goal of having a women-run operation control room at the company in the future.
According to a press release, thirty executive trainees out of 50 who were offered jobs and joined the business undertook a customized induction-cum-training program at NTPC's Regional Learning Institutes (RLIs) in Sipat, Vindhyachal, and Simhadri.
