  • Approximately 80% of the employees in the new plant are women
  • A large number of employees are entering the workforce for the first time

Foxconn, the leading contract manufacturer for Apple, has hired nearly 30,000 employees for its new iPhone manufacturing plant in Devanahalli, a suburb near Bengaluru. The recruitment drive, achieved in nine months, is the fastest expansion of a factory at the scale seen in India.

Covering an area of 300 acres, the plant is part of Apple’s overall plan to reduce its dependence on China for manufacturing. The majority of the employees are female, with 80 percent of the total staff being women aged between 19 and 24 years, who are also first-time employees.

After the commencement of trial production in the spring, the plant has shifted from producing older iPhone models to producing new high-end iPhone models. Over 80 percent of the total production from the plant is being exported to other countries due to its high production capacity.

For its employees, Foxconn has designed the complex to function as a township. Currently, there are six large dormitories, and other facilities, including medical, schools, and recreational, are to be included.

The employees get free accommodations and subsidized food. The average salary for employees is around ₹18,000, placing these positions in the higher end of blue-collar women’s employment in the region.

The facility is still in the process of being expanded, with Foxconn investing approximately ₹20,000 crores in the facility.

Estimates indicate that the facility may have around 50,000 employees by the end of the next year, with the addition of assembly lines. Once operational, the Bengaluru facility is likely to become Foxconn's largest facility in India, surpassing its existing facility in Tamil Nadu.
